The Seven Stars of Hinduism: a Review

The Seven Stars of Hinduism Book I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Dileep Thatte at the Tapestory event I attended a few weeks ago. At the end of the event he told me that he had written a book called The Seven Stars of Hinduism and asked if I would like a copy! Of course I said yes. I love the concept. It is about distilling the core of Hinduism so that it can be explained and understood particularly for Hindu youth in the west.As the Background section states, it is easy to confuse the … [Read more...]

What Is The Purpose Of Life (Episode Three, A Hindu and a Buddhist Walk Into a Marriage)

Brad and I are back! This time we're talking about what the purpose of life is. And attempting to be a little shorter so we've got a video that's closer to eight minutes than nineteen!https://youtu.be/uvJn3geiCZE  Transcript Ambaa: So what do you think the purpose of life is?Brad: OofAmbaa: To start with an easy one [laugh]Brad: Yeah, to start with an easy one. It's kind-of a...a loaded question. I think it depends on your perspective, because last time we talked about … [Read more...]

A Hindu & a Buddhist Walk Into a Marriage: What is Religion and Faith?

Have I taught Brad well or what? Look at him all fluent in The Mahabharata! Also it's kind of hilarious how we try to "catch" each other. I think it's a strength of our marriage that we can have fun with that and not get defensive.https://youtu.be/mY9IQlETlsY Transcript [Intro]Ambaa: So you said something really interesting the other day about defining religion by something--by it having both sacred and profane definitions within it? And that that's like why a political party isn't a … [Read more...]

A Hindu & A Buddhist Walk Into A Marriage: What Is The World Made Of?

I had this idea for a video series a while ago and we finally recorded our first one! My husband and I enjoy discussing philosophy and I thought it would be fun to share that with you guys and capture some of our funny conversations that highlight our similarities and differences as a Hindu and a Buddhist/Taoist. https://youtu.be/Rpxq3GIAlaE Transcript Ambaa: Hi, I'm Ambaa. I'm called "the white Hindu." I grew up in an Advaitan family, so that is a branch of Hinduism that is focused on … [Read more...]

How Does Preventing Muslims Entering America Stop Terrorists?

Even if I were to go along with the assumption that there are terrorists sneaking into the U.S. with refugees, does refusing them entrance actually prevent terrorist acts?Denying entrance to a terrorist does not make him cease to exist, obviously. So that terrorist is still being dangerous and violent...somewhere else. That's the real key, isn't it? As long as it's not in America, we're not going to care. *** Or maybe it's that the terrorists only care about attacking Americans? Do we … [Read more...]

In-Between Not Alive and Alive (the abortion debate)

I am a feminist, a liberal, and pro-choice...and I also think that abortion is morally wrong.A fetus is not alive but it's also not not-alive. It is likely to become alive (although miscarriage is much more common than most people realize). I value this in-between state very highly. If all goes well that not-alive fetus will become a living human and that is a wonderful miracle. Pro-choice means exactly what it sounds like: choices. People seem to have the misconception that we … [Read more...]

Do Moments of Happiness Matter?

Okay, this is a strange thought and not really applicable to real life but I started wondering about it while observing my baby. He is very present. Whatever he is feeling in one moment consumes him and then the next moment it's something else and whatever came before is gone. Most of the time he is happy and giggling and smiling. Then sometimes, of course, he is crying and upset. And when he's upset I start to wonder if those times of happiness matter at all. Are they stored somewhere in his … [Read more...]

Degrees of Enlightenment

I've noticed that a lot of stories in movies and TV have the premise that regular life is dull and empty. So many characters are trapped in mundane lives devoid of meaning. People in real life too often suggest that you have to go and do something thrilling and unusual to give your life meaning. Like cooking dinner, signing kids' permission slips, and sitting on the couch watching TV is not enough out of life. And it all seems very strange to me because I find tremendous joy in the regular … [Read more...]

Most Religions…

I've been running across this phrase a lot recently. "Most religions *blank*" and I think it shows a monotheistic bias.I understand the idea that all religions have come common ideas. I'm on board with the idea that if Truth is universal then people across all places and times have managed to tap into it. (Naturally, I have a bias and I think that Truth is the clearest in Hinduism).Despite this desire that many people have to find commonalities in major religions, I find when they say … [Read more...]
