Most Religions…

I've been running across this phrase a lot recently. "Most religions *blank*" and I think it shows a monotheistic bias.I understand the idea that all religions have come common ideas. I'm on board with the idea that if Truth is universal then people across all places and times have managed to tap into it. (Naturally, I have a bias and I think that Truth is the clearest in Hinduism).Despite this desire that many people have to find commonalities in major religions, I find when they say … [Read more...]

Words Don’t Have Meanings

I end up in this debate every once in a while. I struggle to understand the purpose of telling people not to use words the way they do.I know there is this idea that the Sanskrit word for something is the real and correct word. But to me a word only means what we agree for it to mean. We all have slightly different connotations but we can build a bridge of understanding with the imperfect words we have. Language is always going to be somewhat imprecise. This post is inspired by someone … [Read more...]

Prayer in School

There is a lot of misunderstanding about prayer in public schools and I think it's causing undue stress to a lot of people. The truth is kids can pray in school as much as they like. Muslim students can pray in school, Hindu students can pray in school, Christian students can pray in school. What isn't allowed is for teachers and authority figures to lead prayers or support one religion over another. And if you think about it, that's a very good thing. There was an incident several months … [Read more...]

How Do I Honor The God Within Trump?

I hate to inflate the man's ego, but the fact is Trump has God within him just as much as you and I do.If I were a good Hindu I would be able to see and respect God within his form. What really prevents me is that if I were to give him that respect, wouldn't it be condoning the attitudes and behaviors of his that are deplorable and adharmic? There's a phrase, hate the sin but love the sinner. Usually when people say that, though, they're just using the excuse to be condescending, smug, … [Read more...]

Poverty v.s. Simplicity

There's a trend these days to try to simplify one's life and it's an urge I can definitely understand. Excess stuff kind of tugs at the soul, for me at least. Clutter in my living space become clutter in my mind, taking up valuable space in both the mental and physical realms. In fact, I find a clutter-free space to be as soothing to the mind as a mandala. However, a friend recently posted an article written by someone who sees yearning for a simpler life as cultural misappropriation of … [Read more...]

The Peak of Life

Even though a big part of Hinduism is being present and enjoying what is in front of us right now, I struggle a lot not to stress about losing what I currently have.Right now my life is perfection. I have a wonderful husband and a perfect baby. I own a home and write for a living. Everything that I longed for in my teens and twenties has come to me. And I realized that life is not quite like the role playing video game I had imagined. When you are young you plan for and think about what you … [Read more...]

Are You Not Entertained?

I grew up with a lot of value placed on being present and having quiet times of focus and just being. It is important to have periods of simply existing and connecting with your self and the world around you.Yet even I have fallen victim to the fear of being bored.I pack distractions with me in case of any down time. Books, portable video games, Facebook on my smart phone. I seem to be afraid of any quiet second of just being. I wonder also how much stimulation I should be providing for … [Read more...]

Should We Judge a Religion on the Actions of Its Followers?

I don't know why it took me so long to notice my hypocrisy in this. For a long time it has been easy for me to look at Christianity and Islam and say that there must be something inherently violent or hateful about them because look at the actions of their adherents. Whether it's Christians shooting up an abortion clinic or an Islamic suicide bomber or just a person you meet who says something bigoted, how easy it is to blame the person's religion. To say, look at this behavior and the person's … [Read more...]

Is There Value in Pain?

It's taken me a long time to challenge my assumption that experiencing pain is a valuable and good thing. To some that may sound crazy but I think there's a lot of people out there who assume, as I have, that fully engaging with the world means not escaping from the negative parts. And maybe it's part of the American psyche to think that suffering makes us tougher, stronger, and better. One of my favorite movies is one called My Dinner With Andre. It's a very simple premise of actor/writer … [Read more...]
