Scripture Study: Bhagavad Gita, book three verses 34 – 35

We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. Here are all of the posts on the previous verses for the Gita: Bhagavad Gita StudyFrom the Winthrop Sargeant translation of The Gita... 34. Passion and hatred are seated In the senses in relation to their objects. Yet Another Opinion on CNN, Believers, and Reza Aslan

I have been uncertain what to say about this situation. If you aren't inundated with information about this like I am, CNN just came out with an episode of their show Believers in which Reza Aslan (an expert on Islam and Christianity) showcases various unusual beliefs around the world that featured a very unusual aspect of Hinduism. He visited Hindus called Aghori who practice some very strange things having to do with death including cannibalism. So of course this show is about … [Read more...]

Roll Call

Priyanka, a friend from the Facebook page, said that she would like to connect with American Hindus and non-Indian Hindus. I thought for a few minutes about how I might help with that and I decided that I should do a post asking people to introduce themselves. So this is that post!Whether you are an Indian Hindu in India, an Indian Hindu in America, a non-Indian Hindu in India, a non-Indian Hindu in America or anything in between, please leave a comment and tell us a little about … [Read more...]

The One and Only American Hindu

To help me get inspiration and keep up with what's happening in my world I have some Google alerts set up. One is for the term "American Hindu." Over the years that I've had this alert, nearly all the time it comes up the phrase "American Hindu" is referring to one particular person. This man seems to have a statement for the press about any and everything that happens related to Hinduism in America. I've found it pretty funny to see if it's going to be him. Every time I get an alert I think, … [Read more...]

Maybe Cause You Don’t Understand Eastern Philosophy

I happened to be watching the fun series "Everything Wrong With..." on Youtube and in the Return of the Jedi one there was a moment where he saw a "sin" that to me is just the basic Hindu philosophy that a lot of Star Wars is based on.(start at 13:32 for just this "sin") How does Luke become dark side if he kills the bad guy? The commentator wonders. Why is giving in to his anger bad when he is facing the evil emperor? How can the light side win if the bad guy is not killed? And here … [Read more...]

Making Connections

This past weekend I was at a conference in Massachusetts. One of the talks that I went to was about cultural misappropriation, which is always a good topic for me to engage with. There wasn't a lot of new information for me, but it was good to talk about it with new people and get new perspectives. One thing the moderator brought up was the idea that if you are taking something from traditions that aren't yours (or your ancestors') then you have to give back to the tradition in some way. And … [Read more...]

White Hindu Conversations Part Six

Someone on Facebook in a Hindu group posts a chart of Hinduism and for modern philosophies it includes only Advaita. A man comments that he's a born Hindu and doesn't see himself represented. I note that the chart seems to be missing quite a few sects, branches, and philosophies. His response? Hindu is group of sects and sect are not rigid like abrahamic religions So I'm agreeing with him that he doesn't seem to be represented but his response is to make enormous assumptions about me and my … [Read more...]
