Why Am I Not Fully Content?

Not to brag, but my life is perfect. I have the sweetest husband, a beautiful child, a home. I'm blessed to be able to stay home to raise my son. Sometimes I look around my living room at my husband, my son, my dog and my cat and I feel so incredibly lucky. In my twenties I never thought I would have these simple things that I wanted so badly. And now here I am, living my dream.Yet in the back of my mind something constantly niggles at me.After thinking about it, I believe there are two … [Read more...]

Is It Wrong to Compare Babies and Animals? (plus baby FAQs)

(Scroll down to find some baby FAQs)I made a comment on my Facebook page the other day about me not having a problem with putting little children on leashes. It generated a fair amount of commentary and one friend said "They're children, not dogs."Yet it seems to me that there's a fair amount of similarity between toddlers and dogs. Selective hearing, for one thing! And getting easily distracted or bolting when they want to check out something interesting. Is it insulting to human … [Read more...]

The Baby and My Body

We tend to get very identified with our bodies and see them as "us." It's not an easy habit to see beyond yet pregnancy is kind of a gift in that way. It is an experience that shakes your sense of your body belonging to you.For ten months you share your body with someone else and things you thought were all yours become influenced by someone else. It's not just your torso growing bigger. You and your child are negotiating for the energy that your body has (and the baby always wins). The … [Read more...]

The Baby Battle Plan

Brad and I have spent a lot of time planning and discussing how we want to raise our son (perhaps me a bit more than him with the research and obsessing!) All the while I realize that things never go according to plan. I am reminded of the saying of (apparently) Helmuth von Moltke who said "No battle plan survives contact with the enemy" (thanks to my friend Jeramy for introducing me to this saying). I realize that sounds like I'm calling my baby the enemy but that's not the intention. What I … [Read more...]

How Dogs Prepare You For Parenthood

There's a popular saying that getting a dog is a good way to prepare for eventually having a baby. Lately people have been laughing at this idea but I still believe that it is absolutely true.Sure there are some very clear differences. A baby cannot be left alone, while a dog can stay in the house by itself for hours. A baby must be raised responsibly to eventually become a member of society, while spoiling a dog has less dire consequences. However, I have learned some very unexpected and … [Read more...]

Sringeri Week: Blessings From My Guru

As you guys know, my husband and I have been trying to have a baby for the last couple of years and we've discovered some medical issues that are making it challenging. To update you on that situation, I have been diagnosed with two things: 1) PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) which leads to irregular cycles and 2) under active thyroid.I started medication for the thyroid in October. It turns out that my sudden weight gain over the last few years was due to my thyroid stopping working … [Read more...]

A Story of Adoption

Clearly reading posts on the Internet about adoption is doing nothing more than filling me with fear and doubt. To get a more grounded persepective, I turned to my cousin.Liz has lived through many aspects of the adoption world, from being in foster care to being adopted to having her own child (who is SO adorable!)I asked Liz to tell us a little bit about the process and her thoughts about it. Listening to her, I realize that I tend to have fears to do something if anything could go … [Read more...]

Weddings and What Comes After

Sometimes I feel like I'm rushing through life stages. Things got a little crunched because it took me a lot longer than I expected to find a life partner. Now I've found the perfect man for me. He is so very good to me and we see eye to eye on nearly everything. I used to think when I was younger that I would want some years with my husband to just enjoy each other before we had kids, but these days I don't feel that way anymore. I long for children in a way that I can't even describe. My body, … [Read more...]
