Movie Club: Paa Discussion

I enjoyed this movie more than I expected to. It's pretty amazing that the kid was played by Amitabh Bachchan. I never would have guessed. I kept trying to see him under the makeup but I really couldn't. Kind of clever to have the son played by the father of the actor who plays the father in the movie. Wow that was complicated.Strangely I think my favorite part was in the very beginning before we even meet Auro. I loved the school fair and all the projects. Bandaids between India and … [Read more...]

Movie Discussion: Namastey London

This week I watched Namastey London on recommendation from a friend who knows I'm trying to get better at Hindi.Despite what could have been a very dark theme, it's actually a bright and light film. The main character reminds me of Aunt Robin from How I Met Your Mother for some reason. They have a similar expressions that they give.  This is kind of the horror story of what can happen for western-born desis. Agree to go back to India for a vacation with your … [Read more...]

Movie Club: Kahaani Discussion

What an interesting and exciting movie!Being a thriller, it doesn't have the song and dance numbers that I'm used to in Hindi movies. It's interesting for me to see a different kind of movie since I watch so many rom-coms.I was so engrossed in this movie that I stayed up until 2:00 am to finish it (for context, I go to bed by 10:00!)I liked the way Vidya was being introduced to Bengali culture. Since she was an outsider, I as an outsider got things explained. Like the good name/pet … [Read more...]

Movie Club: Kal Ho Naa Ho

I enjoyed this movie a lot. It's not displacing my favorites, but it was really nice. The title basically means what if there's no tomorrow. As in, live for today. Here are my thoughts as I was watching (there will be spoilers):It's so funny. The grandmother and her friends singing is hilarious and there's a lot of great moments of comedic timing. There are lots of aspects of this movie to draw me in. Such as the interfaith family with the Sikh grandmother and Catholic mother (I … [Read more...]

Movie Club: Honeymoon Travels Discussion

I enjoyed this movie a lot. It was simple and sweet, not as dramatic as some Bollywood (I love dramatic films too, though!).I particularly liked the variety of couples and love stories. It showcased the wide variety of ways people end up married in modern India.Maybe it's weird, but I most closely related to Aspi and Zara. I think Brad and I are that in sync even though we haven't been together since childhood. The dance sequence with them was also incredible. Even though people tend to … [Read more...]

Movie Club: My Name is Khan Discussion

So this week's movie is My Name Is Khan.People have been recommending this to me since it came out so now I've finally watched it!It was hard for me to pull together all my thoughts into a cohesive narrative, so instead I've just listed a lot of the things this movie brought up for me. Be warned, there are major spoilers here! Thoughts... It's always a little uncomfortable watching an actor portraying a disability they don't have. I feel a little...weird... about Shah Rukh Khan playing … [Read more...]

Movie Club: Oh My God

Bollywood movies can be intimidating to get started with when you're a westerner with no background in them. But watching Indian movies is a great way to learn more about the birthplace of Hinduism and begin to understand some of the cultural context of our religion.Plus watching movies from other parts of the world expands our horizons and it's lots of fun. There's lots of great Indian movies out there and a bunch of them are on Netflix streaming. I've seen too few and I want to remedy … [Read more...]

How to Dance At My Wedding

I've put together my own playlist on my iPod for the wedding. Now, most of the music is not Indian. There's a lot of 90s, current pop, and geek "spoof" songs like Roll a D6 and Mario Kart Love Song. And then there's the wonderful blend of both geeky and Indian: Game On by The Guild. But there are also a few Bollywood and maybe one or two Bhangra songs. (Anyone have any song suggestions for me?)My ability to dance to Indian music is pretty limited, so I want to brush up on some basic … [Read more...]

Learn Bollywood Dance

Dance is my favorite kind of exercise. It doesn't even feel like exercising! I love moving to music.I've tended to lean towards learning formal classic dances like Ballet and Bharatnatyam, but I think it would be really fun to learn some Bollywood style dance moves. More useful at parties!Bollywood is mostly a blend of classical dance with folk dances. Here are some videos I found:http://www.monkeysee.com/play/16415-steps-to-the-verse-of-the-song-desi-girlAnd one … [Read more...]
