White Hindu Conversations: Part Four

The office where I work doesn't have a lot of diversity mostly because it's so tiny. There are about ten full time people and occasional contractors. I'm the only woman in this branch. The only person of color is a co-worker who is half Indian and half Irish. In a money-saving effort, I don't usually go out to lunch with the guys, so I don't get to have very meaningful conversations with them.A while back, though, I did decide to go with them to lunch. I was in the car with four boys and … [Read more...]

Non-Desi Hindu: What I Look Like to Others

Our friend Andrea noticed an interesting thread on Reddit a while back and pointed it out to me. It's a group for American born Desis (people of south Asian heritage) and they are discussing how they feel about non-Desi Hindus (or other Indian religions).http://www.reddit.com/r/ABCDesis/comments/1tfva0/nondesis_practicing_desi_religions/I've said before, I feel like my experience most closely mirrors the experiences of American born Desis. I relate to them. I think they and I are working … [Read more...]

What were people enjoying last month? Google Analytics has the answer! Hinduism 101: What Do Hindus Believe I don't know why it took me so long to put something like this together. People are searching to know what Hinduism is and they want to start with the real, real basics. I discovered this when a … [Read more...]

Bhajan Singing

I went back to the Sathya Sai Baba group on Saturday for their more regular service. It's always challenging to be in a new place with unfamiliar people, but I know if I keep at it, I'll make friends and become part of the fabric of the group. The first part was practice for the bhajans, which are hymns. I didn't know what to expect from that, but it turned out to be quite difficult for me. I thought there would be lyric books to look at, but there turned out to be only one. I was given … [Read more...]

Marriage Equality and Hinduism

You may have guessed from some of my previous posts that I am a liberal Hindu. I don't like to draw strict lines of division, make battles of "us v.s. them" or dictate how anyone else should live. I err firmly on the side of letting others make their own mistakes and sorting it out with God and karma themselves. As with any other hot-button issue, there are Hindus on both sides of the marriage equality question. When Hinduism Today interviewed various swamis about their opinion of same-sex … [Read more...]

What Makes Me A Hindu?

This question is the very core of this blog. There are plenty of hippy Americans who practice "alternative spirituality" and use labels like that and others. Why do I think that I'm not just "a spiritual person" but actually a Hindu? What makes someone a Hindu? There is actually very little agreement on that question. I'm not even worried right now about what makes someone a good Hindu!I asked this question on my Facebook page once and I got a wide variety of answers.Someone … [Read more...]
