Bigger the Murti More Powerful the God?

I heard someone ask this question and I was intrigued because it had never occurred to me. Do we measure divinity by the physical space that something occupies? If God is in everything, is there more God in a boulder than in a pebble? If a pebble is one part divinity, is the boulder 500 parts divinity?I don't think so, personally, but it's a very interesting idea.I am reminded of a story I was told growing up. A poor man in a village is getting completely destitute. Some of his only … [Read more...]

My Ganesh Chaturthi 2015 [Hindu Holiday]

I recorded a video of my attempt at a Maha Ganapati Homam at home (using this site as a guide: http://www.vedicastrologer.org/homam/ganapathi.htm) I did a pretty terrible job. Thank goodness my friend Anu is coming over tomorrow to do a puja for me!Before you watch the video, I have some news. I got another positive pregnancy test this morning. This time it was a much stronger result and a little later in the game (14 dpo) so my chances of miscarrying have gone down somewhat. I'm going to … [Read more...]

Ganesh Chaturthi 2015 [Hindu Holiday]

Sri Ganesha's birthday is coming up this Thursday September 17th!This is one of my favorite holidays. I love the theme of renewal and turning over our fears, anxieties, and mistakes to Lord Ganesha to take away with Him.Last year's post has more information about the holiday and how to celebrate (I strongly encourage you to make your own Ganesh murti from the salt and flour dough recipe … [Read more...]

At Ganapati’s Feet: book review

I was sent this delightful little book by the author in return for an honest review. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was totally inspired by him.At Ganapati's Feet by David Dillard-Wright It has the simple eloquence that cuts right through you just like so many of Hinduism's great spiritual leaders. It reminds me a lot of reading Eswaran commentary. The first part is the author's story of how he became connected to Sri Ganesha along with some thoughts about Hindu philosophy. For e … [Read more...]

Ganesha: Everything You Need to Know

Ganesha is the elephant-headed God that is beloved by nearly all Hindus. Goodbye, Ganesha! Safe Journey! Ananta Chaturdasi [Hindu Holiday]

Today is the final day of the Ganesh Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chaturthi) celebrations. It is called Ananta Chaturdasi and this is the day when Ganesha goes back home, carrying all our worries away with him.Since my husband and I share a car and he's at work I knew that I would see Ganesha off a day early on Sunday. Here are some pictures from when I gave my homemade murti over to a river (Oh, and you may notice that I recently cut my hair and dyed it purple!) … [Read more...]

Ganesh Chaturthi 2014 [Hindu Holiday]

This year Ganesha's birthday, Ganesh Chaturthi is on Friday August 29th (this coming Friday) and lasts until the final day, Ananta Chaturdasi, on September 8.This is a holiday of renewal. The belief goes that Ganesha comes to stay with us for a little while and at the end he goes back home, taking our problems with him. People get new Ganesha statues (or make them, see below!) and then at the end of the holiday they are immersed in a river to represent the God returning to his … [Read more...]

Coincidence? I Think Not

My husband, a bit of a comic book nerd, pointed this picture out to me yesterday...Looks like Ganesha, right? It's actually an illustration of "brother Warth" a "blue lantern" character from the Green Lantern comic book series. No doubt he was based on Sri Ganesha, though. Check out the picture of him wearing Indian clothes...On the one hand, it's nice to see Hindu influence in popular culture. On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be much acknowledgment of where the … [Read more...]

Hindu Stories You Should Know

In America, even though it is not technically a "Christian nation," Christian stories and mythos underlie a lot of the culture. There are references to Biblical stories or sayings that are so ubiquitous you might not even realize that's where they're from! Once you start moving in Hindu circles, you will find that there are stories and references that are used as short-hand. Stories that are so universally known that they are used all the time for reference or metaphor. The Churning of the … [Read more...]
