God Isn’t Thinking About You

I had this idea the other day and I hope that I'm able to put it into words because it's kind of hard to explain.I was talking to Brad about my guru and the experience of being in his presence. Then I told him about how when my friend did energy work on me she said she felt a strong connection between the guru and me. That surprised me since I don't know if he even recognizes me one trip to the next. Who am I to him? Just another devotee. (It's possible I'm underestimating how recognizable I … [Read more...]

Miracles and Gurus

I think I am a great example of how important it is to be patient and cautious when waiting for a guru. I've always advised you to exercise great care before dedicating yourself to a spiritual leader. You have the Truth within you and you shouldn't give your power over to someone who doesn't deserve it. And the vast majority of spiritual leaders don't deserve it. There's a lot of frauds out there and there's a lot of misguided people who become leaders because of not pure motives and still have … [Read more...]

Faith, Doubt, and Guru-Bhakti

As excited as I was to get a baby blessing from my Guru, as positive and energized and hopeful as it made me feel, it's difficult to avoid glimmers of fear and doubt.Just like how "faith healers" operate, if your wish doesn't come true then you get the blame for it. You doubted. You weren't totally confident the Guru could do it. Your faith wasn't strong enough.I don't want to have doubts.I want to have perfect Guru-bhakti (devotion) and trust with all my mind and heart and soul … [Read more...]

Bhakti Is The Foundation

Advaita Vedanta has a reputation for being very cerebral. It's a path of study, thinking, debating, talking, and learning. In very general terms it seems that if you want the path of study, you become an Advaitan. If you want the path of devotion you become a Vaishnava. If you want action you become a Shivite. If you want mysticism you become a Shakti. But as I've said before, there is a balance of all these different elements and it's a very rare person who can be fully one and not any of the … [Read more...]

False Gurus & Godmen (Criticisms of Hinduism Series)

Some of my fellow Hindus feel it is important to give reverence and respect to all Hindu holy men, gurus, saddhus, priests, etc. My experience has led me to a different approach.I haven't historically been bothered by portrayals in the media of Hindu "holy" men who are frauds and con men. Because it does happen. But I'm starting to understand now that the portrayals are rather one-sided. In the glee to tear down religion, stories are always focused on the "bad apples."The truth is that … [Read more...]

Can Westerners Gain Enlightenment?

I know I'm always saying that in any given country or population, probably 95% of people aren't going to be strongly spiritual. I'm guessing at that number, but it seems that in the Kali Yuga very few feel the pull to chase down the mystery of what life means. So that means that in every religion and non-religion (in other words, atheists included) there are some who ask themselves the big questions about what our lives mean and others who aren't bothered by those questions. I don't think … [Read more...]

My Future Pilgrimages

My trip to Sringeri was life changing. It shifted something inside me and slightly changed the course of my life. While I was watching the Shishya Sweekara a conviction began to take hold and grow within me. I realized that seeing my guru, going to Sringeri, is the most important thing in my life. So far I have gone only when my dad was going. I would tag along on his trips. And I'm so grateful to have been able to do that! It's expensive to get from America to India. But this is my guru … [Read more...]

Sringeri Week: The Value of Darshan

First of all, darshan is a word that means seeing and being in the presence of someone like a guru or a deity.I don't know how it is that I did not before appreciate the amazing energy that one gets from seeing the guru and being in his presence. It is electrifying.I felt it a little bit in 2011 but I was tuning it out, focused so much on my own problems and thoughts and miseries. This time I was paying attention and I was amazed by what I felt. I had assumed that you don't need darshan … [Read more...]

Sringeri Week: Blessings From My Guru

As you guys know, my husband and I have been trying to have a baby for the last couple of years and we've discovered some medical issues that are making it challenging.
