White Hindu Conversations Part Five

You know how I was talking about trying to use Hindi with customers at the grocery store? I had an experience a couple weeks ago that put me in their shoes and it was...weird.I was at the mall with a friend and, as usual, wearing my little red bindi. (I've spoken before about how important that practice is to me and since that post I've been wearing a bindi full time whether it is inconvenient or not).Anyway, we passed a girl in the hall who I nearly ran into and as we were both … [Read more...]

Language Learning Update

Amazingly it's been around seven years since I first started stumbling towards learning Hindi. For those who are new here is some background: my parents study Sanskrit and so I grew up with some influence of that. I knew the letters of the devanagari alphabet (which both Sanskrit and Hindi use) by the time I was in college. I knew some Vedic prayers. I had a little kid's learn Sanskrit book from the St. James school (affiliated with SES). The one I had is Stories of Krishna part one. Back … [Read more...]

Bullying: Not Black & White

When you watch "very special" episodes of TV shows and they try to address bullying I think the picture they paint misses nuance. In these stories the bullies are always children whose parents have catastrophically failed them and they lash out at others. I'm sure that does happen but it's not the only kind of bully.Middle school age (10-13) is a time when children seem to be going through a developmental stage of experimenting with social behavior. They are testing out and learning how … [Read more...]

Reading the Upanishads: Katha (Part 14)

We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. We are reading one of my favorite upanishads: The Katha. This is the story of a boy who chatted with the God of death.http://www.angelfire.com/electronic/awakening101/upani_katha.html 10 When the five instruments of knowledge stand still, together with the mind and when the intellect does not move, that is called the Supreme State. 11 This, the firm Control of the senses, is what … [Read more...]

Why Am I Learning Hindi?

The YouTube channel Hindi University is working on a project to gather videos from Hindi learners all over the world. The videos have three things: name, where you're from, and why you want to learn Hindi. They asked me if I would do a video and of course I said yes, but then I had to figure out the answer to that third question. Why do I want to learn Hindi? It's strange how difficult that is to answer.Clearly if one wants to learn a language to help advance their Hinduism, that … [Read more...]

Hindi Practice Tuesday on Twitter

Today I am going to be practicing using Hindi. I am probably going to be very bad at it, so if you know Hindi, come on over to Twitter and correct my sentences! One thing to note is that I really need Hindi in devanagari script. A weakness that I currently have is that I have a really hard time recognizing Hindi words written in English characters. It really throws me off. So if you want to correct a sentence and demonstrate how it should be, I'd appreciate if you are able to use Hindi script … [Read more...]

No Wedding Night Sex?

Is this true? Never heard this before! "Well, the joke is on us. I belong to this curious breed called Bengalis (residents of eastern part of India) and we are forbidden from having sex on our wedding night. In fact, we can't even have sex the next night, which is called "Kaal Ratri", which roughly translate to Doomed Night. It's only on the third night that we're allowed to finally share a bed but it's awful sex because the bed is decked out in foul-smelling tuberoses, which don't preserve … [Read more...]

What is Success?

I have a view of comparison that seems kind of radical based on what I see around me. But given that my biggest struggle in life is with envy, I have tested my position many times over.I believe that comparing ourselves to others is always a mistake. It's probably pretty clear that seeing someone's Facebook-perfect life and wondering why we don't have what they have is harmful. So is comparing our spiritual progress to others. The first problem being that you don't really know the … [Read more...]

Three Lessons to Learn from Bridezillas

I may have mentioned before that my taste in TV is...well, let's just say that I love all those crazy reality shows. Especially the gossipy ones. Bridezillas has long been one of my guilty pleasures. I'm not sure why I enjoy watching it so much. I think it's just the shock that people could be so mean to their "loved" ones. It's startling! The thing that really struck me this time as I was watching it was that there is something important to learn from these women: perspective.I watch, … [Read more...]
