Book Club: How to Become a Hindu (Chapter Nine)

The well respected Himalayan Academy and their guru Subramuniyaswami put out a book several years ago called How To Become a Hindu. Over the next few weeks I'll be reading the chapters and discussing each one individually. Today we're looking at the ninth chapter: Embracing Hindu Culture(Book can also be downloaded free here: http://www.himalayanacademy.com/view/how-to-become-a-hindu)This guru has had a profound impact on my identity as a Hindu. Not through this book, but through his … [Read more...]

What Happens When Your Duties Conflict?

A little while back I was reading an article in defense of Lord Rama. Why in defense? Because there are those who feel uncomfortable worshiping him because of what he did to his wife.(For those unfamiliar with the story, Rama's wife Sita is kidnapped and the story of the Ramayana is his quest to get her back. When he finally does, there is no way to fully prove that she has remained "unsullied" by her captor. Even though she walks through fire to prove her "purity", the people will not … [Read more...]

Renouncing One’s Faith

There's a lot of (understandable) anger in the world around forced religious conversion. It's a problem that's been happening to different people from different religions around the world at different points in history.Sometimes it is caused by a religion that thinks it is the only possible Truth and must get everyone else to practice it no matter the cost. Sometimes it is caused by political powers trying to maintain control of the populace.Whenever it happens, we hear stories of … [Read more...]

Reading the Upanishads: Katha part two

Sorry there wasn't a post yesterday, I've been sick all weekend :( But I'm back on track now! Today is another Hindi practice day on Twitter, so come on over if you'd like to participate! *** We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. Today is the third post of my favorite Upanishad: The Katha. This is the story of a boy who chatted with the God of death.Chapter One (part … [Read more...]

Reading the Upanishads: Katha part one

First off, I have to say that last week's Hindi on Twitter was a great success. I got over my fear to try writing and producing sentences in Hindi and people on Twitter were very supportive and gave me helpful tips. They corrected my grammar and most importantly, explained why what I was doing was wrong! So I'm trying it again today. Join me on Twitter if you'd like to check out my Hindi skills (or lack thereof! lol). *** We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some … [Read more...]

A Book For Learning Pujas and Prayers

I discovered this book browsing Amazon and last week I ordered it to see what it's like...I have to tell you, this is a really cool book! It's designed to teach children puja steps and prayers to various Gods, so it is clear and bright and easy to read. Unfortunately, in the Amazon version it does not come with the audio CD for hearing the pronunciation of the Sanskrit. Another version is available from their website. There is lots of detail about pujas and how to perform each … [Read more...]

Personal Stories of Hindu Gurus

A tradition that encourages complete devotion and worship of a human teacher is ripe for exploitation.I believe in gurus, but I also believe in always keeping your eyes open to make sure that you aren't being taken advantage of by an unscrupulous one. [Hindu-blog.com has an excellent post on avoiding fake swamis]When we think we have found the answers, or found someone who has the answers, it can be easy to dismiss things we are uncomfortable with. I believe in spiritual teachers, but I … [Read more...]

White Hindu Conversations: Part Four

The office where I work doesn't have a lot of diversity mostly because it's so tiny. There are about ten full time people and occasional contractors. I'm the only woman in this branch. The only person of color is a co-worker who is half Indian and half Irish. In a money-saving effort, I don't usually go out to lunch with the guys, so I don't get to have very meaningful conversations with them.A while back, though, I did decide to go with them to lunch. I was in the car with four boys and … [Read more...]
