Got My Holi Afterall

Holi was very late for me this year, but I'm glad I didn't miss out completely! As I mentioned before, my baby shower happened to be on the same day as the big Holi event in this area. It's a little sad to me that you have to find an event and go to a location to participate in Holi. I do wish it was more all around and something you encounter as soon as you walk out of your house. But it is what it is and most years I make the trip to the ISKCON temple that puts on a great event. This year I … [Read more...]

No Holi For Me This Year

Today is Holi! It's one of my favorite holidays (see lots of information about it here), but no opportunity for me to celebrate it this year, sadly. It's tough when the rest of the world around you is not celebrating something. Particularly a community celebration like Holi.Almost every year I've lived in Maryland I've gone to the Potomac ISKCON temple near D.C. for their huge Holi event. But this year I accidentally scheduled my baby shower for the same day as their event! I had no idea … [Read more...]

Mahashivratri 2016

I hate when blogs do this but I'm going to start with an apology! I've clearly been struggling to keep up with my writing and I feel deeply guilty about that. I think about you guys every day and try to get myself to the computer. But I've been having a lot of trouble with low energy. I'm fine and the pregnancy is good but it's still challenging and I had no idea how hard it was going to be to focus enough to write. I'm going to try to commit to doing two posts a week until I can get back to my … [Read more...]

Navratri Holiday Party!

It was a hectic week last week. Had to do a lot of work to make sure I've got health insurance in the coming year. But I think we've done it! I'm so grateful to my friend Sarah who helped me every step of the way, even bringing her two little kids to the health office so I could get signed up in person. But today it is time to celebrate. Brad's school is having their holiday party and I'm so proud of him that for the winter holiday party he and his class decided on a Navratri theme. Okay, … [Read more...]

Diwali 2015 [Hindu Holiday]

So first off we went to the midwife yesterday and everything went great. We heard the fetus's heartbeat! It was pretty amazing. Helped to make it all feel real and the pain I'm going through worth it. The midwife was concerned about my mental state, though, and she is sending me to a therapist so I can hopefully get out of this funk and enjoy my pregnancy! One of the biggest Hindu holidays of the year is coming up next week. Diwali (also called Deepavali) is happening on Wednesday November … [Read more...]

My Navratri 2015

I have a very good friend who is Gujarati and she invited me to join her and her fiance at a Gujarati Samaj event in our area. I didn't know about this organization. I'll have to learn more about them and maybe go to more events. This was a huge event, a garba dance for Navratri. We all got dressed up and went out for Indian food (to fit the theme). Then we showed up at the dance where there were HUNDREDS of people dancing in a beautiful and wild circle. I adore the chaos and the energy of … [Read more...]

Get Ready for Navratri!

Another one of my favorite holidays, it's almost Navratri time. The festival starts October 13th and goes for nine days until October 21st. One of the traditions that I love most is the Southern tradition of collecting and displaying of golu (of kolu) dolls. It's like a Hindu version of doing a Christmas village, which is such a fun way to dress up your house for the special occasion.Traditionally what you do is get a series of steps in an odd number (3, 5, 7, 9, or 11) and put your murti … [Read more...]

My Life in Hindu Holidays

I've had some really special moments of my life happen around Hindu holidays. We got married the day after Krishna Janmashtami and got to rock baby Krishna at the temple during our wedding ceremony. And this year it was the morning of Ganesh Chaturthi that I got a definitely positive pregnancy test.Today I go in to the doctor for my second blood test to make sure everything is progressing well, but I'm at four and half weeks pregnant right now and all the signs are looking good.I'm … [Read more...]

Ganesh Chaturthi 2015 [Hindu Holiday]

Sri Ganesha's birthday is coming up this Thursday September 17th!This is one of my favorite holidays. I love the theme of renewal and turning over our fears, anxieties, and mistakes to Lord Ganesha to take away with Him.Last year's post has more information about the holiday and how to celebrate (I strongly encourage you to make your own Ganesh murti from the salt and flour dough recipe … [Read more...]
