Bigger the Murti More Powerful the God?

I heard someone ask this question and I was intrigued because it had never occurred to me. Do we measure divinity by the physical space that something occupies? If God is in everything, is there more God in a boulder than in a pebble? If a pebble is one part divinity, is the boulder 500 parts divinity?I don't think so, personally, but it's a very interesting idea.I am reminded of a story I was told growing up. A poor man in a village is getting completely destitute. Some of his only … [Read more...]

Do I Really Want Enlightenment?

I was reading an article in Hinduism Today about Varanasi, which is  a place where people say if you die there you gain liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth. They spoke to someone there who is a worker at a hospice care center there and she said that she sees many people come to Varanasi to die but most still have attachments and will be reborn. Very few are really ready for liberation. No surprise, since enlightenment is not easy for a soul to attain. It takes hundreds, possibly … [Read more...]

Decoding Deepak: A Review

My parents were visiting us this past week for Thanksgiving. We had a great time working on the house and eating traditional Thanksgiving food like pumpkin pie, green beans, bread stuffing, and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately I also got sick just as family arrived! I tend to pick up anything that's going around and now that my husband is an elementary school teacher it's even worse! So I had a fever for part of their visit and we took it easy and looked for things on TV to watch. One thing … [Read more...]

My Experience with Rajiv Malhotra

Ever since I started my blog I have been getting recommendations to read the work of Rajiv Malhotra. His book is called "Being Different" and it has really spoken to the current generation of Hindus who are ready to take pride in themselves and their traditions. (Actually he has several books but that's the one people keep mentioning to me!)After having his work recommended at least once a week for the last several years, I was really thrilled when my local temple announced that he was … [Read more...]

Compassion for a Friend

A friend of this blog who is both a non-Indian Hindu like me and also gay has written a heart breaking essay about his experiences of homosexuality and Hinduism. It's a must read!Empty Without EmpathyHe urges us to have compassion for others and acknowledge their hurts even if the material world is not the ultimate reality. He asks us not to distance ourselves from the suffering of our friends and neighbors with philosophical platitudes. It is my own personal theory that these kinds of … [Read more...]

The Moment of Death

When I was growing up I was taught that our thoughts at the moment of our death matter. That moment is the one that will set you on the course for whatever comes next, whatever kind of life you'll move to next. For this reason, I don't want to die in my sleep. I want to be aware and in control when death comes for me. As scary and upsetting as it may be, I hope to have the presence of mind to meditate, to think of God, and to turn my trust over to the universe, at the very least to focus on … [Read more...]

What is Our Duty in Injustice?

The comments on this post got way out of hand and seriously off topic! But it brought up an interesting question for me.  What should our response, as Hindus, be when we hear of injustices in the world?I have to preface this by saying that I have a very hard time trusting any report I hear through the media. There is no news source that doesn't have a bias and it is impossible to share information without putting some kind of slant on it. I grew up in the Internet age: I'm very cynical about … [Read more...]
