Why Do Hindu Beliefs Vary Widely? [Google Questions Answered]

Curious to know what people were wondering about Hindus and Hinduism, I went to Google and entered some prompts. For example, I typed "Why do Hindus" and then paused to see what questions would come up. Marriage Equality and Hinduism

You may have guessed from some of my previous posts that I am a liberal Hindu. I don't like to draw strict lines of division, make battles of "us v.s. them" or dictate how anyone else should live. I err firmly on the side of letting others make their own mistakes and sorting it out with God and karma themselves. As with any other hot-button issue, there are Hindus on both sides of the marriage equality question. When Hinduism Today interviewed various swamis about their opinion of same-sex … [Read more...]

True Story of a False Guru

The American Buddhist blog has a very interesting article that really fits the theme of yesterday's post about being careful about what guru you follow. He speaks about a documentary movie where a disillusioned Hindu man sets out to prove that gurus can be anyone, whether qualified or not. It apparently examines the current landscape of American spirituality, particularly in the "yoga movement."I'm very interested to see this movie! Thus builds the climax of the film: Kumare’s “ … [Read more...]

Beware Gurus

I asked a little while back if a guru is necessary. Many people (with good reason) say yes. How can one navigate the complex path of human spirituality with no guide? For me personally, I put a lot of faith in my inner Self to guide me. But I am jaded from the experience of coming from an organization that some would call a cult. Most people will want or need a guru to guide their progress. What I ask is that you select such a teacher with extreme care.I definitely believe that there are … [Read more...]

Ambaa’s Holi

Did I play Holi? Oh yes. Yes, I did!Early Saturday morning we drove down to the ISKON temple and they were all ready for us. I went with my fiance and my very good friend and his girlfriend, so there were four of us all together.First we stopped in at the temple and I bowed to the Gods, then we went to the parking lot where colors were already flying. The energy was fantastic. Everyone was pumped up and laughing and having a great time. There was music in the background and a guy who … [Read more...]

Holi

Holi is an Indian holiday for spring and it is just about the most fun you could possibly have! This year it is March 27th and our local temple is doing its event Saturday March 30th. It usually lasts a couple of days and there is a bonfire on the last day.The main event during holi is the throwing of colors. In India, you could be pelted with powdered color on the streets or hit with a water gun of colored water anywhere you go. Here in America, you've got to go to particular areas to … [Read more...]

Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

That question has haunted religious people for thousands of years. I remember reading Rabbi Kushner's book When Bad Things Happen to Good People when I was in high school and I was disappointed by his conclusion. His answer to that question? Because God is limited. He'd like to help, but sometimes He can't.Seriously? That's not an answer I can accept. God does not have limits. There are many books on this subject, struggling to give an answer to this perplexing problem. We want to believe … [Read more...]
