Got My Holi Afterall

Holi was very late for me this year, but I'm glad I didn't miss out completely! As I mentioned before, my baby shower happened to be on the same day as the big Holi event in this area. It's a little sad to me that you have to find an event and go to a location to participate in Holi. I do wish it was more all around and something you encounter as soon as you walk out of your house. But it is what it is and most years I make the trip to the ISKCON temple that puts on a great event. This year I … [Read more...]

No Holi For Me This Year

Today is Holi! It's one of my favorite holidays (see lots of information about it here), but no opportunity for me to celebrate it this year, sadly. It's tough when the rest of the world around you is not celebrating something. Particularly a community celebration like Holi.Almost every year I've lived in Maryland I've gone to the Potomac ISKCON temple near D.C. for their huge Holi event. But this year I accidentally scheduled my baby shower for the same day as their event! I had no idea … [Read more...]

Hindu Holiday: Holi!

I love Holi. It is one of my favorite holidays of the year. If only we lived somewhere with cooperating weather! This year Holi is this Friday March 6th and right now there's a snow day out of Brad's school because of ice storms. Last year we were rained out and had to celebrate Holi late. This year the Hare Krishna temple (which hosts the biggest and best celebration) isn't even attempting it until early next month! For those who do "color runs," this is the holiday those are based on. When … [Read more...]

Ayurveda Roadblock Plus Holi

So last week I started to talk about ayurveda and what it is. I wanted to see how one would get started using ayurvedic principles in one's life, but the trouble is that there are a whole lot of practices that are claimed to be ayurvedic in origin and it's hard to determine the authenticity of a lot of these claims. The Internet is awash with diet suggestions that say they are ayurvedic, but it seems to me that things in the west claiming to be ayurvedic are different from those things in the … [Read more...]

Holi Hai! [Hindu Holiday]

One of the very funnest of the Hindu holidays is coming up next week. This year is seems to coincide with St. Patrick's Day here in the States. The web tells me that Holi starts March 17th. For all the info, check out last year's post about Holi, its origins, how to celebrate, and interesting tips: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/whitehindu/2013/03/holi/ Masala Mommas told me about a new app this year that helps kids learn about Holi. It sounds like you get to play holi virtually! More info here: … [Read more...]

Ambaa’s Holi

Did I play Holi? Oh yes. Yes, I did!Early Saturday morning we drove down to the ISKON temple and they were all ready for us. I went with my fiance and my very good friend and his girlfriend, so there were four of us all together.First we stopped in at the temple and I bowed to the Gods, then we went to the parking lot where colors were already flying. The energy was fantastic. Everyone was pumped up and laughing and having a great time. There was music in the background and a guy who … [Read more...]

Holi

Holi is an Indian holiday for spring and it is just about the most fun you could possibly have! This year it is March 27th and our local temple is doing its event Saturday March 30th. It usually lasts a couple of days and there is a bonfire on the last day.The main event during holi is the throwing of colors. In India, you could be pelted with powdered color on the streets or hit with a water gun of colored water anywhere you go. Here in America, you've got to go to particular areas to … [Read more...]
