Our Wedding Hits the Big Time

I have been reading A Practical Wedding for five years. Yes, that is longer than I've known my husband. It's not just my love of all things wedding that drew me in; Meg and her team are having conversations that are vital for all women and those who love them. They are never afraid to examine the truth of things, whether fears about using the word "wife" and how that might change one's identity or what it's like to get divorced after putting a lot of effort into a wedding. It's real and it's … [Read more...]

Hindu/Scottish: Ambaa’s Epic Wedding Post

My wedding weekend kicked off on Thursday August 15th with a dinner with my parents, brother, and mother-in-law. Friday my parents had lunch with my father-in-law and my brother joined Brad's 12 hour bachelor party (it started noon on Friday and went until a bit past midnight!) Meanwhile my parents and I went to pick up relatives at the airport and have dinner with them.Back at my apartment, my cousin Emily, a talented makeup artist from Los Angeles (check out her page Emily Does Makeup), p … [Read more...]

Flowers for A Hindu Wedding

For my wedding I'm not looking for the usual. I don't want bouquets or boutonnieres. What flowers do Hindu weddings have?1) Jai Mala garlands (also called Var mala)When a Hindu bride and groom come together, they usually exchange flower garlands that are like giant leis.     This blog has a tutorial on how you can make your own strands of carnations: VeccoStudio.com (They recommend 20 carnations per foot of garland)If creating … [Read more...]

How to Dance At My Wedding

I've put together my own playlist on my iPod for the wedding. Now, most of the music is not Indian. There's a lot of 90s, current pop, and geek "spoof" songs like Roll a D6 and Mario Kart Love Song. And then there's the wonderful blend of both geeky and Indian: Game On by The Guild. But there are also a few Bollywood and maybe one or two Bhangra songs. (Anyone have any song suggestions for me?)My ability to dance to Indian music is pretty limited, so I want to brush up on some basic … [Read more...]

Wedding Dupatta

Our friend Andrea gave me a link to a post of different draping styles for dupattas for a wedding: http://www.peachesandblush.com/2012/03/lehenga-draping-styles-for-brides.htmlI tested a few of them out today. However, I have a problem. The dupatta that came with my dress is incredibly heavy. No matter what clips I wear, it falls off my head. I even tried modifying my hairstyle so that I had a bump to rest the dupatta against, but it was so heavy that it crushed even that and slid off my h … [Read more...]

Your Choice: Christian or Jewish

I love that we've picked an all in one caterer/venue/planner for our wedding. It makes the whole thing a lot simpler to plan. I can just rely on them to fill in a lot of the details!Of course they are used to producing standard, cookie-cutter, western weddings and ours is anything but! You get a choice of the color of your table cloths, but they aren't really prepared for changes bigger than that. Our site has a lovely online planning portal to help you organize the details of your day. … [Read more...]

The Wedding Dress

The dress may just be the best part of the wedding. Okay, that and the being married to the sweetest, kindest man in the world once it's done.I knew that there were a couple different directions I could go with the dress. As part of the east/west blend, I could do an Indian style dress in white. But I don't really have any desire to wear white and red looks excellent on me. I can envision my wedding pictures with me in a deep red dress. So, choice one was settled:Choice two was … [Read more...]

Wedding: Budgeting

As previously stated, I'm pretty cheap. People being nice might call it frugal. I'm very careful with money, I guess because it represents safety and stability to me. So even though my parents are quite traditional and believe in a bride's family paying for a wedding, I still have a lot of trouble parting with any money. That's my dad's retirement money! We have found a venue that is an all in one catering, decorating, organizing, etc. It is less stressful to have a venue that takes care of … [Read more...]
