Using White Privilege for Good

In the last few years I have been fortunate enough to be connected with many people who are exploring the ideas of racism and racial privilege. I had a lot of learning to do and it's an ongoing process as I learn to set aside my own opinions to really listen to the opinions of those whose voices are not as easily heard as mine. (Here are some great essays and cartoons to get you started if this is a new concept for you too!)Even when I'm not being racist myself and even though I'm not per … [Read more...]

Taking Responsibility for Racism

I think our minds are experts on shifting blame away from ourselves. No one likes to feel like something is her fault, especially something huge and terrible. (I suspect that's one reason why people get extremely defensive when they are accused of being racist. Most of us try very hard not to be racist and to be told that we are in some way is very hard to hear.) Sometimes the mind is sneaky about this. I caught mine absolving me of responsibility and it took me a while to realize it was doing … [Read more...]

Hoping to be Born Brown

(Note: I am on my honeymoon this week, so if your comment doesn't show up right away, give me a day or two!)Most of the time I'm just living my life, trying to be a good person, trying to live up to the ideals my religion sets for me: to help others, to see everyone as myself (or at least as family), to react calmly rather than in anger.Every so often I stumble on something that forces me to confront a larger issue that is always in the background of my life: the cultural … [Read more...]

“But I have an Indian friend”

The cry of racists everywhere. "But I'm friends with [insert race or ethnicity] people!"One of the criticisms that was leveled against me when my wedding was on APracticalWedding.com (comments no longer there because the APW team is awesome) was "Just because a couple of Indian people you know said it was okay doesn't mean it was okay."I was sorely tempted to say "What do you mean a couple?" I could point out to her that I have 1,600 fans on my FB page, the majority of which are native … [Read more...]

White People Helping

I read an article from Facebook about yet another white person who is out "saving the savages." That might be a little harsh, but there does seem to be this savior complex with white people. We want to fix the world and be do-gooders but the attempts to help often turn out misguided and more than a little racist.A Real Maasai Woman's Thoughts on the White 'Warrior Princess' ChickThis "white person comes to save the non-white people from their own systems" is a very common narrative. We … [Read more...]

Top Posts of July

I've seen some other Patheos writers do a summary post of their most popular posts of the past month and I thought that was a really good idea. Since I have Google Analytics on my page, I can look up and see which posts got the most attention and that should help me to learn what people are looking for so I can give you more good content. The most popular posts here for last month were:1) No Wedding Night Sex?Okay, I can see how this would draw some traffic, even though that wasn't … [Read more...]

Sick & Tired of Being Called “Privileged”

There are times when I feel exhausted from having to monitor myself and make sure I'm not accidentally being racist (and sometimes I still fail). There are times when I am so tired of hearing about how privileged I am and how much responsibility that gives me . Can't we all just forget it and get along? Do people really have to take offense? And then I remember that no matter how annoyed I may feel about having to be respectful of the position I'm in (post coming soon on cultural … [Read more...]
