Belief v.s. Practice

My husband made a comment here on the blog a few days ago that really struck a chord with me about the difference between belief and practice in religion. It's on this post: What Is The Purpose of Life?Michael Rogers • a month agoI'm sad to read all this superstitious material concerning Buddhism, (my dictionary defines superstition as beliefs in concepts that are un supportable) What I have read about Buddhism is that it isn't a belief system but should survive empirical de … [Read more...]

Is Your Relationship With God Keeping You A Child?

I am finally able to put into words something that has been tickling the back of my mind. It has to do with the relationship with God some people have. I think this may be a key difference between an Abrahamic conception of God and a Hindu conception of God. (Though it may be more due to individuals than particular religions. Just because I haven't met Hindus who have this relationship with God doesn't mean they don't exist!)I started thinking about this when I got a comment on my Youtube … [Read more...]

The Seven Stars of Hinduism: A Review

The Seven Stars of Hinduism Book I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Dileep Thatte at the Tapestory event I attended a few weeks ago. At the end of the event he told me that he had written a book called The Seven Stars of Hinduism and asked if I would like a copy! Of course I said yes. I love the concept. It is about distilling the core of Hinduism so that it can be explained and understood particularly for Hindu youth in the west.As the Background section states, it is easy to confuse the … [Read more...]

A Hindu & a Buddhist Walk Into a Marriage: What is Religion and Faith?

Have I taught Brad well or what? Look at him all fluent in The Mahabharata! Also it's kind of hilarious how we try to "catch" each other. I think it's a strength of our marriage that we can have fun with that and not get defensive.https://youtu.be/mY9IQlETlsY Transcript [Intro]Ambaa: So you said something really interesting the other day about defining religion by something--by it having both sacred and profane definitions within it? And that that's like why a political party isn't a … [Read more...]

Why Can’t We Have Certainty?

It's scary to admit doubt.I don't want anyone to think me less of a Hindu because deep in my heart I have fear. I wonder if it's all true. I wonder if I'm wrong and death will be nothing but an ending or an emptiness. Some people seem so very certain of their Gods and their beliefs. I wish I could be that way. I wish I could rest in the certainty that death is only a new beginning. But I'm afraid. It's frustrating that there are no solid answers in this life. We have no proof of any … [Read more...]

Which Religion Is “Winning”?

Based on a post from a Christian collegue of mine, I'm going to say something that might sound crazy: It's great if a young Hindu in India starts believing in Jesus and converts to Christianity. Good for her! I'm so glad she's found a path that makes her happy and inspires her to do good in this world. It's great if a white American finds Islam to be the perfect path for her. It's great if someone from Switzerland decides to become a Buddhist. It's great if someone who grew up Muslim … [Read more...]

My Maha Shivatratri: First Fast and Vigil

I did observe Maha Shivratri last year, but I did it alone and there's no way I can stay up all night when I'm by myself! This year I was able to have a more complete experience by participating in the event with my brothers and sisters at the Sathya Sai Baba bhajan singing group. That was Friday evening, but first was Friday during the day. Perhaps I should have taken the day as a holiday from work, but I was sick recently and missed a couple of days so I wanted to be at the office. At … [Read more...]

Beware Answers

I'm not about having answers. I'm all about having questions.I'm not going to claim that I understand everything. Of course I don't! And I'm not sure that I want to have all the answers.Because what I see is that when people feel like they've got it all figured out, they stop growing and they stop learning. It reminds me of when I was young and I was watching some TV program about math. I told my mom that I already knew this stuff. She told me I needed to let go of thinking that I … [Read more...]
