Ambaa Starts Bhajan Practice

Brad and I have been attending a Sathya Sai Baba bhajan singing group for a little over a year now. We love the community there. We don't manage to get there every week but we do try. It's a nice little service most of which is people leading bhajans.Bhajans are a call and response type hymn with simple lyrics (though sometimes complex melodies). My friends there have been encouraging me to try leading one of these songs and so I've taken some weeks to pick one out and start … [Read more...]

Ratha Yatra

You guys, I had an awesome Sunday.Yesterday was Ganga Dussehra, but in my south Indian circle we had another celebration on Sunday. We had a special Ratha Yatra of Shiridi Sai Baba.I only found out about it the night before, so I'm glad I didn't have any Sunday morning plans because I always love getting to participate in ceremonies with my friends at the Sathya Sai Baba bhajan group. We got an early start at 8:00 am at the house of one of the families in the group. They have a lovely … [Read more...]

Religion is a Drug

I don't mean that in a "religion is the opiate of the masses" kind of way, but I realized recently that there is nothing like the blissful high of joining with a faith community and singing.Every Saturday that we can manage it, we walk the half mile to the Sathya Sai Baba group and sing bhajans for an hour.I throw myself into the songs and my voice, along with my spirit, feels lifted up by the voices all around me. It is the greatest experience I've ever felt.Even on days when I feel … [Read more...]

India 1979

Over the weekend Brad and I were visiting his mother and we ended up spending a good part of the day looking at old picture albums. It was really nice. And I discovered this picture...That would be Brad's mom in Agra in 1979, three years before I was born. It was such a special find and she let me take the picture to show you guys! *** On Saturday Brad and I were able to go together to the Sai Baba group. We had a great time again. This time there was a discussion/study group before the … [Read more...]

Bhajan Singing

I went back to the Sathya Sai Baba group on Saturday for their more regular service. It's always challenging to be in a new place with unfamiliar people, but I know if I keep at it, I'll make friends and become part of the fabric of the group. The first part was practice for the bhajans, which are hymns. I didn't know what to expect from that, but it turned out to be quite difficult for me. I thought there would be lyric books to look at, but there turned out to be only one. I was given … [Read more...]

My Experience with Sathya Sai Baba Group

Brad and I went to check out the Sathya Sai Baba group at the interfaith center on Saturday. There was a special event going on for Mother's day with the teenage groups doing a presentation. We were a little late getting there (it was quite a busy weekend!), so we slipped in and got the second half of the boy's presentation about recycling, reusing, and the protection of the environment. Definitely a cause near and dear to my heart! Then the girls sang some gorgeous music to slides of … [Read more...]

Meet a Guru: Sai Baba

I can't recall how or where I first heard of Sai Baba. I don't know much at all about him or his teachings (yet). I'm going to do some research today so we can both learn about him. I know I have at least heard of him before. Seeing his picture on the website of the congregation I'm going to be checking out, I instantly recognized it because of his wild frizz of hair.BackgroundŚri Sathya Sai Baba is the spiritual name of a recent guru who was said to possibly be the reincarnation of  Sai … [Read more...]

Finding a Community

I'm all about planning ahead. I like to have a project to work on. My fiance says it's in my astrological nature. So as I plan my wedding, I'm also definitely thinking about the step that comes next: having kids. We really want to start a family right away.As we start to prepare and think about bringing a child into our family, the biggest concern to me is having a Hindu community around us. I want other people in my children's lives giving them Hindu ideas and beliefs. I don't want it to … [Read more...]
