How Do I Honor The God Within Trump?

I hate to inflate the man's ego, but the fact is Trump has God within him just as much as you and I do.If I were a good Hindu I would be able to see and respect God within his form. What really prevents me is that if I were to give him that respect, wouldn't it be condoning the attitudes and behaviors of his that are deplorable and adharmic? There's a phrase, hate the sin but love the sinner. Usually when people say that, though, they're just using the excuse to be condescending, smug, … [Read more...]

Diwali 2016

Diwali (also called Deepavali) is here early this year! It is in fact this weekend, at the same time as Halloween.I'm not sure we're going to do anything for it this year. I haven't even put up my lights! For weeks I've been telling myself to get them up but it just feels too hard. I guess having an infant is a pretty good excuse.I want to go to the events happening at the nearby Kali temple, but by the time I found out about them we already had plans to visit my mother-in-law.So … [Read more...]

A Game of Reincarnation

Yes, you heard me right! I am a big fan of tabletop gaming. It is, in fact, how I met my husband. Last week I discovered this new game called Karmaka, which is a card game about evolving from a dung beetle up to moksha.Right now the game is not yet available because the pre-order just ended and it comes out in October or November, but they have a free print and play version on their website. You'll see the cards there are half in color and half in black and white. I didn't realize at … [Read more...]

Why Am I Not Fully Content?

Not to brag, but my life is perfect. I have the sweetest husband, a beautiful child, a home. I'm blessed to be able to stay home to raise my son. Sometimes I look around my living room at my husband, my son, my dog and my cat and I feel so incredibly lucky. In my twenties I never thought I would have these simple things that I wanted so badly. And now here I am, living my dream.Yet in the back of my mind something constantly niggles at me.After thinking about it, I believe there are two … [Read more...]

He’s Here! Meet Garrick Ravi…

I am in a little bit of awe and it's hard to take the enormity of this experience and express it. It's hard to access my usual reflective thoughts in the midst of something so staggering and grand. Our son was born exactly one week before his due date, last Saturday May 21st. He is three days old today. The experience of labor and delivery was unlike anything I ever could have imagined. None of my plans or research meant anything. Even though it went well, it was still brutal. Childbirth … [Read more...]

For New Readers

Every once in a while I like to do a post of links to my previous articles because there's a lot of new people who find me through search engines or recommendations and most, I think, are interested in some very specific issues of being a non-Indian Hindu. So rather than have you get lost in day-to-day posts, here are some links to the posts that best explain me and the way I feel about being a convert to Hinduism:My own personal favorite post is How To Explain Hinduism, a guide to dealing … [Read more...]

Bigger the Murti More Powerful the God?

I heard someone ask this question and I was intrigued because it had never occurred to me. Do we measure divinity by the physical space that something occupies? If God is in everything, is there more God in a boulder than in a pebble? If a pebble is one part divinity, is the boulder 500 parts divinity?I don't think so, personally, but it's a very interesting idea.I am reminded of a story I was told growing up. A poor man in a village is getting completely destitute. Some of his only … [Read more...]

Is it still patience if you have no choice?

At last my due date is actually within sight. It felt like this time would never come! But now I'm five weeks from the expected arrival of my son. It's absolutely amazing. No matter how many billions of times this has happened before, it is still such a miracle. And it is SO HARD to wait to hold him in my arms, to look into his eyes! One might say that it requires patience to get through the last month of pregnancy, but I don't think I can claim the virtue of patience when there's nothing … [Read more...]

The Baby and My Body

We tend to get very identified with our bodies and see them as "us." It's not an easy habit to see beyond yet pregnancy is kind of a gift in that way. It is an experience that shakes your sense of your body belonging to you.For ten months you share your body with someone else and things you thought were all yours become influenced by someone else. It's not just your torso growing bigger. You and your child are negotiating for the energy that your body has (and the baby always wins). The … [Read more...]
