Pagan Radio

Cross-posted to The Juggler

It’s no great secret that one of Evangelical Christianity’s secret weapons in spreading into the culture has been radio. Between owning their own stations or using “translators” to boost one station’s signal to many markets, the “good word” has been spread far and wide. Far from being isolated, these stations are now entering the mainstream as “family friendly” radio that presents itself as a counter-balance to secular music and news stations.

Paganism has been very good at gaining ground in publishing, but has so-far been marginalized when it comes to radio. Most of the shows are internet only and the shows that are on the radio are usually music programming only. This is an area where pagans of all stripes can get involved in the grass-roots and enlarge the spectrum of religion on the radio. The easiest way is to get involved in community radio stations and low power fm stations.

We need more than pagan music (a term that many Christians will consider redundant) we need talk and interview shows that are vital and responsive to the local communities. We need to remember that effective national change starts at the local level. Do something timely, do something that interests you, parenting, politics, culture, so long as it brings our unique world-views to the table.

I currently host a monthly pagan show on WEFT 90.1fm (a mix of talk and pre-recorded interviews and news) and I plan to start a weekly talk program on the brand-new LPFM station here in town called WRFU.

I challenge local leaders to volunteer at their local community, public and LPFM radio stations and look into the process of getting a show. You would be surprised at how easy it can be, and maybe we can start a whole new revolution in pagan expression. Lets take things to a higher level.
