Today is the International Day of the World?s Indigenous People a UN sponsored event designed to “strengthen international cooperation for solving problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as human rights, the environment, development, education and health.”.
In honor of the event here are some great issues to pay attention to:
The ongoing resistance to government oppression of the Mohawk community of Kanehsatake in Canada.
The call for autonomy by the Australian Aboriginal communities.
The Embera people in Columbia who are caught in the cross-fire of war.
The seizures of Shoshone land for a nuclear dumping ground despite opposition from 80% of the native population.
That is just scraping the surface. Despite the assurances we like to give ourselves that the oppression and elimination of indigenous peoples is a thing of the past it is still very much an issue that is affecting hundreds of thousands of people today. From the outright slaughter in some areas to the slow erosion of rights happening in our own backyard.
