Wild Dancing

So this years Eurovision song contest winner is one Ruslana from the Ukraine who has based some of her look and style off of the Hutsul people a somewhat remote group who practice a unique blend of Christianity and Pagan beliefs.

Now then, all this attention has spawned a renewed interest in the ways of the Hutsul people including folk festivals and touring groups of Hutsul dancers. It’s now the next big thing.

“This culture is really popular now and it’s getting to be more and more widespread.” says Irina. “Starting with Ruslana, it’s now used a great deal here. Everyone in Ukraine and Europe knows this music.”

Some however worry that all the attention from pop-stars and the press could distort the traditions and ancient ways.

“I think it would be better for the world to see the real, authentic music in its natural surroundings. People should only use themes from this music after studying it seriously.” – Alexandra Marianirna, Carpathian music expert

In any case, you can expect to hear more of this style of music in the future, the fact that it’s a culture that hasn’t abandoned it’s pagan roots is just an added plus.

Here and here and here are Mp3s of Ruslana’s songs.
