The Media is Twisting The Christian Arm
This is a new one. An anti-corporate, Chomsky-quoting, conservative evangelical author warns us against corporate power, but not for the usual progressive reasons.
“The media tell us that we must be politically correct, accept diversity, and be tolerant of even those dogma we don’t believe in or those people we normally would not chose to befriend. Most notably is that the media has us disbanding Christianity while forcing us to accept the soaring of paganism and Satanism; and partake in malevolence, sin and wickedness.”
What startles me about this isn’t the paranoia over the “soaring” of modern Paganism (pretty standard in certain conservative evangelical circles), but that a Christian would think that a modern global corporation cares what faith we adhere to. The corporation wants us to consume and buy, and if you don’t like the content on fiendish satanic cable channel 5, they most likely own stock in sanctified holy cable channel 12 as well. The control of the media isn’t about forcing evangelicals to accept modern Pagansim or be politically correct, the control of the media is about keeping us distracted with pop-culture (and culture wars) so that it can be business as usual when it comes to politicians making policy that favors the rich.
Would Jesus be writing editorials about the tolerance of Paganism in the media or would he be trashing mini-malls inside of mega-churches in ‘battle of Seattle‘ fashion? Would he be advocating for anti-gay legislation or would he be walking in Africa healing the sick?
The left and right need to realize that the culture wars are a red herring and focus on the fact that we are losing the last bit of control over our economic future (and access to home-grown media outside the Internet). Those in power want the grass-roots to fight over gays, abortion, guns, and biblical monuments. They don’t want us discussing economic and foreign policy.
The author while starting down the right track in realizing the danger of massive corporate power is merely boxing shadows when worrying about the Satanic agenda.
