Pope vs Potter

Pope Benedict XVI (the artist formerly known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) in his tireless battle to create a “bulwark against [the] rising world paganism” is warning parents of the dangers of Harry Potter.

In two letters Benedict sent to a German Catholic critic of Harry Potter back when he was still a Cardinal, Benedict warns of the books “subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly.”

The Potter camp who had enjoyed a modicum of Catholic tolerance under John Paul II is trying to minimize the effect of the letters. Neil Blair a spokesman for JK Rowling’s literary agent is reminding the press that these are not Papal letters.

“We do note that these letters were written some time ago and certainly way before he became Pope”

This ongoing worry over Harry Potter has become really tiresome hasn’t it? Anyone who actually reads the darn things know that religion and faith are never mentioned in the books, and the mythological elements are no more pervasive than in the books of CS Lewis or JRR Tolkein. But since Rowling (who I believe is a Christian) hasn’t framed them as a metaphor for Christ she is slammed over and over again by religious critics looking to get their name in the papers.
