Terrorism or Heroism

The Los Angeles Times gives a moving account of eco-activists trying to halt illegal and ecologically unsound logging practices. The main drama of the article revolves around Jason “Shunka” Wilson’s efforts to save a tree named Aradia. Like in many of these accounts the logging companies (really huge corporate entities) spend millions dodging due process and branding the activists as “eco-terrorists” who are out to put working-class loggers out of a job. In reality these companies no more care about their loggers than any typical modern corporation. Profits matter. People don’t. Despite the “terrorist” tags it is often the environmental groups that agree to middle-ground compromises to save old-growth and ecologically sensitive forests. Meanwhile the lumber corporations often renege on deals at the first opportunity and cut at abusrdly fast rates to minimize public scrutiny.
