Witching The Media

Beliefnet has an article up on depictions of witchcraft in films (and on television). It is fine for what it is, but I question the author’s portrayal of the movie ‘The Craft’.

“One of the best portrayals of Wicca on film”

What? Is she kidding? Where does Beliefnet find these people? Anyway, they also have companion articles on how Hollywood still gets it wrong, and a re-posted article by Phyllis Curott on the popularity of good witches.

All fine and good I suppose. But I wish Beliefnet would bring a bit more depth to the table when bringing up topics associated with modern Paganism. All the pop-culture and light-as-air explanations of our holidays grows boring for actual Pagan readers (or at least for me it does).

I wish that Beliefnet would bring a bit more depth to the table on any topic they choose to cover. I have this memory of going to beliefnet and finding interesting insightful topics on religion, but it just doesn’t seem to be the case any more.

On this topic, it may interest you to know that apparently production has begun on a remake of The Wicker Man (starring Nicholas Cage as the cop): http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/629/629916p1.html. The island will be off the coast of Puget Sound this time, and residents will be at once more “Dionysian” & “earthy-crunchy.” Hard to know just what to make of that… And, ps to Vox, in case he checks back in on this thread– I agree that beliefnet has definitely migrated more & more in the direction of least common denominator (ever since they nearly went under following the dotcom-bust). Sad, but there’s just no (or not much) money in the business of critical analysis.
