Save Us Wiccan!
Marvel Comics home to such super-hero standards as Spider-Man and the X-Men is now giving us a teen hero who seems to be quite proud of his religious affiliation.
“Wiccan”
Originally called “Asgardian” in the new comic series “Young Avengers” he was introduced as a sort of teen version of the mighty Thor. But it seems that over the course of the series it is discovered that he is actually a “teen mage” and as of issue #6 will be calling himself “Wiccan”. On top of this the character has been outed as gay and is in a relationship with another character in the book, something which has gotten a good bit of press in the comic world.
Writer Allan Heinberg (of “The O.C.” fame) seems to be taking some inspiration from Shojo manga where the supernatural and same-sex infatuation and relationships are common. Is this an effort to garner more teen (and female) readers? In any event, it is too soon to tell if “Wiccan” will be worshipping the old gods any time soon.
