The Religion, The Musical Genre

Gary Sewell of Herald Democrat takes a look at the confusing world of musical genre classifications.

“By definition, “music genre” is a category of pieces of music that share a certain style or “basic musical language.” Music can also be categorized by non-musical criteria such as geographical origin. Categorizing music, especially into finer genres of subgenres, can be difficult for newly emerging styles or for pieces of music that incorporate features of multiple genres.”

He then proceeds to list a huge array of genres from a web site he found.

“…New Romantic New Wave, New Metal, Noise, Nerdcore Hip Hop, Nowave, Noisecore, Opera, Operetta, Oldies, Oi, Old Timey Country, Outlaw Country, Pagan, Polka, Polk Punk, Progressive Rock, Punk and Hardcore, Paisley Underground, Philly Soul…”
