Spiritual Perception and DMT
The Non-Prophet blog has a guest essay from Dr. Rick Strassman, author of “DMT: The Spirit Molecule”. In the essay, Strassman argues that DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) an entheogenic substance produced in the human body and in several plants (DMT-containing plants and their use is an issue currently before the Supreme Court) re-wires our brains to see the unseen.
“I have gradually come to favor a primarily spiritual explanation of DMT’s effects. This model is wedded to the material, but not limited to it. That is, DMT changes brain function in such a manner that we can apprehend previously unperceived phenomena. For lack of a better term, we usually call these phenomena spiritual??they include all the “sense” modalities in which we “hear” and “see” in those states. We also perceive new mental forms taking shape as memories, associations, feelings, and insights.”
Strassman argues that a new model of study and experimentation of entheogenic (aka hallucinogenic) substances that takes the best from religious, shamanic, clinical, and therapeutic models should be adopted and explored. That once we approach these substances without our current cultural prejudices we have immense potential for human growth.
