Political Pagans Talk Paganism
The Daily Kos community Street Prophets (which discusses religion and politics) is hashing out those ever-pertinent questions about modern Paganism at a special “Roundtable” thread.
“Pagan and Neopagan are umbrella terms. Use of them revolves around funky and obscure debates about whether one’s including faiths like Asatru, which clearly was never exterminated by Christianity, whether various faith traditions are reconstructed/reconstituted (modern) religions based on ancient ones or are revivals from religious traditions that were maintained in small (mostly family) communities below the radar of inquisitions and lynch mobs… and of course, faiths that are openly modern constructions on ancient foundations or modern constructions inspired by ancient ways. Watch where you walk, there are occasionally unmarked boggy spots…”
In a somewhat related matter, Metafilter ponders the case of Julie Carpenter who has been reassigned from her job as a bus-driver due to her beliefs as a Wiccan and her relationship with the controversial candidate for governor Jonathon “The Impaler” Sharkey.
“I’m not a lawyer, so I’m just guessing, but that can’t possibly be legal. Wicca is an officially recognized religion, just like Christianity and Judaism. The US Army’s chaplain guide has a section on wicca. Now, don’t get me wrong…I think the “impaler” is bugfuck insane…but you can’t punish the relatives / friends of lunatics, just because they associate with madmen. My guess would be that Superintendent Sleeper has just cost his school district a large sum of money when Ms. Carpenter wins the inevitable law suit.”
