So That’s Why!
The Christian religion, steadfast enemy of licentious frolic.
“Our pagan ancestors, especially in Northern Europe, used to relieve the winter gloom by celebrating the Lupercalia, a so called “light feast.” But it quickly developed into a great licentious frolic, featuring lurid torchlight processions. It was to supplant this that the Church encouraged her own “Light Feast,” sometimes known as the Mass of Candles or Candlemas.” – Father Anthony Figueiredo
Yet people wonder why ancient pagan customs are still so popular. I’m sure I would have made it to church more often as a teen if “lurid torchlight processions” were a possible element.
