So That’s Why!

The Christian religion, steadfast enemy of licentious frolic.

“Our pagan ancestors, especially in Northern Europe, used to relieve the winter gloom by celebrating the Lupercalia, a so called “light feast.” But it quickly developed into a great licentious frolic, featuring lurid torchlight processions. It was to supplant this that the Church encouraged her own “Light Feast,” sometimes known as the Mass of Candles or Candlemas.”Father Anthony Figueiredo

Yet people wonder why ancient pagan customs are still so popular. I’m sure I would have made it to church more often as a teen if “lurid torchlight processions” were a possible element.
