Opening A Book of Shadows

What happens when a grief-stricken Wiccan succeeds in summoning the Celtic goddess Morrigan? What are the ramifications for her life and the lives of those around her? That is the beginning of a comic written by fantasy author Mark Chadbourn and illustrator Bo Hampton entitled “Book of Shadows”.

Conceived as a prequel to his “The Age of Misrule” novels, the two-issue series follows the exploits of Annie Lovelock, who suffering from the death of her boyfriend, obsessively performs Wiccan rituals in hopes of understanding the world around her. What she doesn’t know is that the old gods and creatures of myth have returned to earth, and her rituals now work in a way she never expected.

“The premise of the Age of Misrule is that the ancient pagan gods have returned to the world we see around us, followed by all the creatures we thought existed only in myth. It’s the passing of the Age of Reason. Science is failing as magic returns to the land. Suddenly there are shapeshifters in the supermarket, Fabulous Beasts over the freeway, and humanity is no longer at the top of the evolutionary chain. Book of Shadows is set just before the point where all this happens, and all these strange, terrifying and fantastical creatures are creeping back to hide in the corners of our society, biding their time. It has different characters, different scenario, but the same basic premise.”Mark Chadbourn, Newsarama

Both issues are scheduled to be released in April. You can look at a seven-page preview, here. You can read an interview with Mark Chadbourn about the comic, here. This looks like it should appeal to fans of Celtic mythology (and Wiccans in over their heads), while serving as way to introduce American readers to Chadbourn’s “Misrule” books.
