Forgot to add-Wallis needs to remain credible with evangelicals.-But to prevail he must avoid seeming too militantly progressive. "The country is not hungry, I don't think, for a religious left to counter the religious right," Wallis told the NSP conference. "The country is hungry for a moral center."That says everything you need to know about them. To throw money at them is a waste.

In order to get into the door in many of those religions, highlighting our neo-pagan connections would be counter-productive.In order to build a real "religious left", it would require work on creating interfaith dialogues, regardless of the religions involved. It would also require that they not ignore the not-so-PC passages in the scriptures, and aknowledge and admit that not everything in them does not have to correspond one hundred percent with their political views (if non-fluffy pagans are not going to romantisize the past, why should liberal Christians?). To not do either will only bite them in the ass in the future, and make their project meaningless.

I've actually been following Lerner's Network of Spiritual Progressives since it started, and have communicated with him via email. Here is what he said when I asked him about the inclusion of Pagan faiths in his movement:"Neo-pagans are not excluded, but neither are they going to be given equal attention with the larger religions in which we seek to challenge the growing power of the religious right. In order to get into the door in many of those religions, highlighting our neo-pagan connections would be counter-productive."I thought that was interesting.
