Not Near Home and a Tragedy
I am away today tending to family business (relative undergoing surgery), so my ability to effectively blog today is limited. But I just wanted to quickly add that my prayers and thoughts go out to those affected by the horrible tragedy at Virginia Tech. It is difficult to find meaning is such madness, and the press is already looking for a “hook” to explain how it happened.
“You’re waiting for something that points toward the source of this evil. You want to know a source, don’t you?”
No matter the eventual consensus, such events try our faith and strain our community. My faith teaches me that there is no supreme being doling out punishments or disasters, that our madness (in most cases) is uniquely ours, not the providence of divinity (whether close or distant). I can only hope that after the madness clears, we can know that the dead have already found peace, and that those left affected with grief, anger, and fear will find the help and guidance they need to carry on.
Peace to you today.
Addendum: Chas Clifton (himself a college professor) discusses vulnerability in the classroom, and praises the pragmatic heroism of Professor Librescu.
Addendum II: This just in from Circle Sanctuary:
“Wiccans, Druids, and other Pagans who have been personally impacted by this tragedy and in need of counseling and/or other spiritual support with a Pagan orientation should contact the Circle Sanctuary church office as soon as possible. Circle Sanctuary has put together an emergency response team of several of our ministers with grief counseling skills who are available to do counseling and other support by telephone. Email: healing@circlesanctuary.org or call: (608) 924-2216. Include your name, phone number, and email address and a description of your needs.
Pagan groups and healers in the Blacksburg, Virginia area and vicinity who are available to help Pagans on the Virginia Tech campus and elsewhere in the area in need should contact Selena: selena@circlesanctuary.org right away. Include a phone number, email, and information about what kind of help you can offer. If you are doing any memorial circles and healing rituals, please mention this.”
