I’ve had the opportunity to discuss this with a few journalists (none of whom knew I was a Wiccan while we were discussing it), and the sad fact is that it doesn’t even occur to them that it’s an actual religion. They just see it as a quaint thing that nutters do when they’re bored with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Partly this is because the mainstream media’s definition of a “religion” means hierarchies (pope, archbishop, imam, whatever) and real estate (church, synagogue, temple, mosque). I’m glad Wicca doesn’t have overly much of either of these things, but it does make us harder to recognise for people with narrower points of view.

Don’t be such a blow-hard. Her particular practice is entirely beyond the scope of such a “fluff” piece. This is not a journalistic exposé on Wicca, but rather a convivial piece on one woman’s eclectic beauty shop.

I think that I don’t so much blame the press in a situation like this. I don’t really see what her denomination would have to do with her endeavor.What I question is the use of her “religion” as a commercial enterprise. This just really rubs me the wrong way.
