Where Asatru is Going

Astrid at The Northern Path brings to my attention a series of podcasts interviewing representatives of national Heathen organizations. The program “Ravencast” has just posted an interview with Heimgest of the Odinic Rite.

“In our continuation of organizational interviews we were very pleased to speak with Heimgest of the Odinic Rite. During the interview Heimgest touches on many subjects such as prison ministry work, environmental activism, and programs for children.”

Previous interviews included Patricia Lafayllve of The Troth, and Stephen McNallen of the Asatru Folk Assembly. Next month they plan to interview a representative from the Asatru Alliance.

This sounds like an excellent way to see where Asatru as a whole is going, and how different Heathen organizations envision the future. Kudos to “Ravencast” for this excellent service to Asatru and the wider Pagan/Heathen community.

Yes but will any of them actually confront the racial issues? Will they ask McNallen about his “racialism” or the Odinic Rite’s leaders? The last time this came up on a blog and I said something, I had a poster do a rant about how racialism and wanting a religion for only white people was not racism. Asatru is still colored (pardon the pun) by this issue.I say this as someone who started and led a kindred and who used to be a godman and elder-in-training for the Ring of Troth (now The Troth) during the early to mid 90s.

And, in fact, they interviewed McNallen and ran away from the issues.

no more racist then is say Judaism; try showing up at Temple in typical Arab garb….I am not Norse pagan but I see a place for them at the table. The world has many flavors; why should all of it be homoginized in the same bowl?

I know of a couple of people in Asatru whose ancestors are both Africa and European. Some of them even look African. You’d be amazed (or maybe, actually, you wouldn’t) at the crap that they’ve had to put up with at attending gatherings, *especially* AFA gatherings. People see a “black” guy and start on with “Why are you here? Why don’t you practice the religion of your people?” when the person in question is at least 1/4 and possibly 1/2 of European descent.Racialism is just a nice face on simple racism.

Well, that’s why it’s nice to know that everyone on the planet is descended from people who lived in what we would now call Africa.
