I'm frustrated that elements of my own spiritual and political convictions were presented to movie-goers in the form of a cinematic straw person, assembled unintentionally by a director who didn't afford Earth-reverencing religions (or the host of political issues he sought to address) enough respect not to botch his portrayal with a predictible, unsophisticated plot and uncomfortably bad dialogue.

If it is Cameron's hope to win hearts and minds for the advancement of native people's rights, economic justice, pacifism, religious diversity, and ecological awareness, by most indications, he'll have to ensure that the quality of Avatar's sequal(s) is improved considerably: as is illustrated by the flurry of acquaintances' vindictive comments that appeared on my Facebook feed following Cameron's failure to stand out at the Academy Awards, a film that many people saw isn't necessarily a film that many people liked.

I thought people went to see Avatar because it's pretty, not for the message. After all, it was in 3-D.
