Unleash the Hounds! (Link Roundup)

There are lots of articles and essays of interest to modern Pagans out there, sometimes more than I can write about in-depth in any given week. So The Wild Hunt must unleash the hounds in order to round them all up.

That’s it for now! Feel free to discuss any of these links in the comments, some of these I may expand into longer posts as needed.

By all means see the movie and raise funds for Cherry Hill. But also become educated about the disinformation that pervades Amenabar’s film. I know it’s just a movie. And yes Rachel Weisz manages to be deeply philosophical, three-dimensionally human, and drop-dead beautiful all at the same time; and Sami Samir is mesmerizing as the evil arch-villain Cyril; and the relationship between Theon and Hypatia is very well developed (if 99.9% fictional), and the movie itself is quite beautiful especially on a Big Screen, and so forth. So sure, watch the movie – I did (and I even kind of enjoyed it).

But in the true spirit of Hypatia, do some research about ancient Pagan science and philosophy. If you do you’ll learn that far from inspiring uncritical acceptance of his theories, Ptolemy was an articulate and effective advocate for experimental science, a paradigm that was already ancient by the time Hypatia was born. A little research will also show that Amenabar actually lets the Christians off relatively easily, while inventing atrocities that Pagans never committed. All in all the film is about as “educational” as the Da Vinci Code.

Dear gods, the last “Heathen” I want to see on a national stage is Dan freaking Halloran.

I can only imagine how he’ll throw the rest of us Heathens (along with the Aesir and Vanir) under the bus in Tampa.
