OneMillionMoms ramps up the hatred after being properly ignored.

Christina here…

Oh goodie! I just got another email from OneMillionMoms, the small organization that uses arbitrary large-sounding numbers to pretend they represent more people than they do.

If you recall, the last email from them I blogged about here.

Here it is, with my comments.

JC Penney is Now Insulting Its Customers

February 2, 2012

Dear Christina,

OMM began contacting JC Penney after the store announced that comedian Ellen Degeneres would become the company’s new spokesperson. Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of its customers are traditional families. As consumers, what we find tragic is a corporate office and customer service department that not only transfers customers to voicemail, but even hangs up on them rather than verses hearing their concerns.

Who does OMM give such a damn about DeGeneres’ sexual orientation? JCPenney is not promoting their new partnership by saying, “LOOK! JCPENNEY IS A HOMO FAG LOVING LESBIAN EXHIBITIONIST COMPANY, RUN BY A BUNCH OF GAYS WHO WANT TO HAVE BDSM SEX IN THE STORE WHILE YOU SHOP AND KISS (WITH TONGUE) IN FRONT OF YOUR CHILDREN WHILE THEY CRY CROCODILE TEARS! AND WE SELL PORN TOO!” They just hired someone who is popular, good natured, and philanthropic as a spokesperson.

OMM’s parade of bigots have their “concerns” transferred to voicemail because their “concerns” are illegitimate and hateful.

It is absurd to think that a company would find treating customers in this fashion an acceptable behavior.

It is absurd to think that people are so offended by the sexual orientation of another person that they ignore all of the good that person has done for the world. Hanging up on you is the least JCPenney should do. JCPenney should tell you to take your hate somewhere else, as they don’t want you in their stores.

Our members stated their concerns in a kind, professional manner.

I bet they did. Prove it.  While you’re at it, tell me how many calls JCPenney answered and listened to before they got tired of hearing the same disgusting spat.

Insulting customers by ignoring us will not be tolerated.

Ignoring hate – actually a pretty good policy for a corporation.

OMM members can shop elsewhere if JC Penney does not appreciate our business.

Good! I don’t want to stand in line next to someone with such vile thoughts floating in their brain. In fact, please don’t shop anywhere – stay home.

Unless JC Penney decides to be neutral in the culture war and listen to customers in a considerate fashion, their brand transformation will be unsuccessful.

They are being neutral. Politely hanging up the phone rather than giving you a piece of their mind is about as neutral as you can get.

Degeneres is not a true representation of the type of families who shop at the retailer.

A variety of types of families shop at JCPenney – one of the larger retailers in America. I guess OMM thinks only married, Christian couples with 2.5 children and a homophobic streak shop at JCPenney.

The small percentage of customers they are attempting to satisfy will not offset their loss in sales by offending the majority.

How many people watch Ellen DeGeneres’ show? Oh yeah… 2.74 MILLION views per episode. I think people like her well enough. Quit trying to pretend you’re bigger than you are.

Since JC Penney won’t listen to us nationally, it is time we let them hear from us locally!

TAKE ACTION

Since the corporate office doesn’t consider your call important, please call your local store manager. Local managers can are more likely to listen to your concerns and pass them along to the corporate office.

Only because they can’t easily escape you.

Urge them to tell corporate that Ellen DeGeneres is a poor choice for spokesperson and should be replaced with someone who more represents your family values (please be polite when you call).

Like who? George W. Bush?

You can find the phone number of your local store here, or in your local phone directory.

Sincerely,

Monica Cole, Director

OneMillionMoms.com

P.S. Please forward this to your family and friends! Become a fan of OneMillionMoms on Facebook! If you use Twitter, keep up with the latest information by following us.

If so inclined, call your local store and tell them you support their choice. Don’t let a tiny group’s shrill bleating shut down equality.

If you can’t do that, tell them in the comments section here. JT and I will personally visit the local JCPenney this weekend and hand a print out of this post to them.

Update: I found the complaint form for OneMillionMoms. Go complain.

Sent an email telling JC Penney that not to listen to the haters.

  • http://bracketsquared.com Kat

I’m glad JCPenney is ignoring the bigoted complaints, and I hope they don’t believe that this represents all (or even most) of their customers. Having Ellen DeGeneres as their spokesperson is a wonderful move, and makes me think a little more highly of JCPenney.

  • http://freethoughtblogs.com/wwjtd JT Eberhard

Awwwwwwwwwwww! OMM wants someone to pay attention to them? Come on over to WWJTD! We’ll pay lots of attention to you. :D

  • Jeremy Shaffer

I love that their idea of “being neutral” is apparently acting as if LGBT do not exist, which it seems is exactly what OMM wants ultimately. I’m sure that’s just a coincidence.

    • http://nathandst.blogspot.com NathanDST

Interesting idea, that ignoring the LGBT is being “neutral.” Here’s a thought then, why not ignore romance, sexuality, and gender altogether? No more marketing certain clothes to women, and others to men. Of course, any clothing will then have to be able to fit all kinds of body types, so I guess baggy and shapeless is in. No more Valentine’s Day sales, as that references romance and is not neutral. I suggest androgynous drawn characters take the place of live models in JC Penney’s posters. Make up should probably no longer be sold, or perfume, given how intertwined with sexuality those items are.

Yes, I think this “neutrality” thing is a wonderful idea.

      *eye roll at OMM*

  • Tommy R.

Good job JC Penny, keep up the good work. I don’t understand how these people can think Ellen and JC Penny are so evil.

  • http://langcultcog.com/traumatized DuWayne

I shop there a little and get my quarterly haircut there as well. My family is just me and my two boys. I am referred to as papa and occasionally momma. My family doesn’t even come close to OMM’s fucking cookie cutter and never will, thank you very much. I like to think we count anyways, in spite of my pappa/momma duality.

I will have to let OMM know just what my family thinks aboout what they want to assert about families that shop at Penny’s.

  • imjustred

I’m a glutton for punishment today. I went to OMMs website and looked at their “OMM Successes” and tab and spot-checked a few of their “victories”. Needless to say, their claims are specious at best, and prevarications cut from whole cloth at worst. I think they should change their organization’s name to “TwoTrollsIn MississippiWhoMayOrMayNotHaveChildrenLikeItMatters”

  • Rory

JC Penney should take a look at what happened to Lowe’s recently when they decided to knuckle under to bigots and realize that they have a lot more to gain by standing up for what’s right than they have to lose. Good for them for ignoring these wingnuts.

  • ‘Tis Himself, OM

A couple of homophobes are whining because JC Penney doesn’t care about the sexual orientation of a spokeswoman.

  • http://grahamshevlin.com/current Graham Shevlin

Maybe JC Penney did the analysis and concluded that they would gain more by signalling inclusiveness to consumers than by signalling exclusive, narrow-minded asshattery…

  • Mriana

These women are sick people and need to get a life, as well as maybe some medication from their doctors.

  • http://realistfantasies.xanga.com Janee

I will have far more respect for a company that supports equality than one which supports bigotry.
OneMillionMoms is bigoted and wants JC Penny to cow to their discriminatory ideas.
I say, don’t listen JC Penny and you’ll have far more worthy and loyal customers.

  • Aliasalpha

You know the funniest thing about it, the numbers. 2.74 million ellen viewers vs *ahem* “1 million” mothers, even if all 100 err sorry 1,000,000 quit shopping there immediately, the shop would still have the potential profit of 1.74 million customers

Maybe it might have been better when they were pulling a number out of their arse that they picked one that was larger than the viewer base of their mortal enemy (who wants to destroy their family in ways that are never adequately explained)

  • Icaarus

I hate most talk shows and even I cannot be immune to Ellen’s charms. JC Penney – good choice in spokes people. Also good luck Ron Johnson, keep neutral, as in keep ignoring the bigots.

  • Tim

I’m sorry that you and many of your readers seem to have a problem with someone (or many) not agreeing with a life style. I guess in your world one can not stand up for their beliefs because there is no right and wrong… so there should be no beliefs that say something is right or wrong. I’m sorry that some Christians are not a pushover and do not buckle to media pressure or posts such as yours. One glorious day the you and the world will be rid of Christians and their crazy convictions, that day has many names “Second Coming”, “The Rapture”… etc. you may have hear of it. From that day forth you can sit back and watch the world quickly spiral into moral chaos at such a degree that you can not even imagine. Sounds great eh? Your all CAPS rant in your above article will be a joke and a pipe dream to what reality will have in store. Ok, I’m done, I guess you can press that “Delete Post” button now (so much for free thought if this gets deleted), I do not expect this post to last long on your site. Sincerely Tim

I don’t have a problem with disagreements. I have a problem with hatred toward people. You are making a strawman of my position.

I guess in your world one can not stand up for their beliefs because there is no right and wrong… so there should be no beliefs that say something is right or wrong.

Huh? How do you come to the conclusion that we don’t think there is a right and wrong?

Stand up for your beliefs all you want – and I’ll stand up and show you why you’re wrong.

I’m sorry that some Christians are not a pushover and do not buckle to media pressure or posts such as yours.

I’m sorry you have to be so passive-aggressive?

One glorious day the you and the world will be rid of Christians and their crazy convictions, that day has many names “Second Coming”, “The Rapture”… etc. you may have hear of it. Duh, ‘atheist’ = ‘no morals because morals are only obtained from the bible’ remember?

    • N. Nescio

You know what? I hope your ‘rapture’ occurs TOMORROW.

You have no idea how eager I am to be rid of sanctimonious jerks like you. I suspect people have been feeling this way for just as long as your ilk has been waiting to levitate.

    • bbgunn

See Tim, your had your say. The atheists didn’t censor you. Now, go back to reading your bible or singing psalms or handling serpents or whatever you do for Jebus.

I’m sorry that you seem to have a problem with someone (or many) not having your life style.

In fact, quick empathy test here. Let’s say you live in a Middle Eastern country where the dominant religion is Islam. A business there hires a Christian, and is then deluged with a flood of hatemail and calls from Muslim fundies saying that the person should not be hired solely on the basis of their Christianity. Would you not have a problem with that?

    • Rory

You can agree or disagree with whatever you like, you mouth-breathing troglodyte. However, when you express your idiotic, backward moral views by boycotting companies who aren’t sufficiently bigoted for you, the rest of us are well within our rights to point and laugh at your stupidity and to put our money where our mouths are.

And while I love the idea of all the sanctimonious idiots being raptured right out of the world, I like even better the fact that there is no god, there will be no rapture, and slime like you are going to have to live in a world that’s increasingly uninterested in your pious bullshit.

    • anteprepro

I’m sorry that some Christians are not a pushover and do not buckle to media pressure or posts such as yours.

I’m sorry that you seem to be too pig-ignorant to fully understand what is going on here: We aren’t moral relativists bleating angrily about someone daring to have an opinion. No, we actively believe that OMM and the people pretending to have the moral high-ground are the ones that are truly morally wrong. And believe that the people who think like them are extremely ignorant, illogical, and acting truly immorally in the name of “morality”. Stand up for your bigoted beliefs all you want. It will not make you less of a bigot. And it will just be another example illustrating exactly how bankrupt the anti-homosexuality position is.

Seriously, you are valiantly whining in defense of someone whining valiantly in opposition to a company using Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson, due to the high crime of her being a lesbian. Full-stop. And all the Bible-thumping in the world isn’t going to make such blatant bigotry less bigoted and more moral.

  • Stephen Foster

I like Ellen; I think she’s smart and funny. Sexual orientation? Who cares, she’s smart and funny.

I like JCPenny more now, too.

  • Sas

“How many people watch Ellen DeGeneres’ show? Oh yeah… 2.74 MILLION views per episode.”

Plus, I just happened to check Ellen’s twitter feed, and she has over 9 million followers. OMM has just over 750.

    • N. Nescio

They’ve got a whopping 39,000 facebook ‘likes’, and an absolute deluge of people telling them what jerks they are in the comments of their ‘wall’ posts. Heh.

  • Cynthia

Kudos for leaving Tim’s letter up; the temptation to say nasty things about him is HUGE, but I’m going to feel sorry for him instead.

Sent an email to JCP HQ telling them thanks for hiring such a nice woman for their spokesperson.

It’s 2012 – can’t we stop caring about who you sleep with? Or how many? Or if you sleep with anyone? Please? Because it just doesn’t matter. Repeat after me – consenting adults can do what they want, consenting adults can do what they want…

  • Crazy Pants

I’m in support of JCPenny’s choice. I hadn’t shopped there in a long time, but that can be quickly remedied this coming weekend. :-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/1MillionMomsAgainstOMM Rita

I posted my support for Ellen and JC Penney’s on JCPs Fb page. They responded directly to me, saying thanks for my support and they love having Ellen as their spokesperson.

One Million Moms won’t win this one. Besides, they don’t even have one million moms!

The page numbers speak for themselves:

    Ellen Degeneres: 2,141,350 likes

The Ellen DeGeneres Show: 6,768,292 likes

    JC Penney: 2,427,947 likes

    OMM’s: 39,116 likes

    Enough said.

  • B-Lar

There has been an upsurge in right wing bigotry taking shots at corporations recently, and its quite refreshing to see that JC Penny are not capitualating.

I hope that my message of support for them gets through. Bigots do not have the moral highground no matter how they may scream that they do. Ellen remains an excellent, high profile, wide reaching choice of public face and the fact that she likes the ladies bears no relevance.

I hope you posted a sine. (I fear we’re going of on a cotangent)

  • Mr.Kosta

Congrats, you homophobe excuses for human beings. You’re just making JC Penney and DeGeneres’ nomination more popular with your insidious whining.

  • http://justdfacsmaam.wordpress.com MarkNS

I can’t get to their FB page. Does it somehow know I’m a atheist?

  • http://criticallyskeptic-dckitty.blogspot.com Katherine Lorraine, Chaton de la Mort

If OMM’s complaints form is anything like AFA’s complaints form, it’s going to be binned and ignored. Back when I was still a Christian (losing my fundiness one day at a time) I complained about how mean-spirited and un-Christ-like the AFA was being in response to a Sears (I think) advertisement that was perhaps indicative but maybe not of a gay couple or maybe it was a couple of guys, but hey they were guys and they were together in a living room or something like that. They ignored it.

  • http://www.decrepitoldfool.com george.w

Huh – that reminds me, I need some shirts. JC Penny probably has some that I would like in my size. Thanks OMM!

And thanks to AFA for letting me know Home Depot apparently stands up for equality as well. These social conservative orgs are so helpful.

  • Jessica

Ugh. I hate shopping like you don’t even know. But if I find myself in need of something JC Penney sells (I guess I’ll have to find out what exactly that includes), I’m going to go in there, with my wedding ring and my 2.5 kids, ask to speak to the manager in person, and tell them with a smile and a firm handshake that I am proud of their employer for not caving in to these bigots and to please pass on my thanks.

    Shopping. Ick. Effing Christians.

  • BRamsey

@26 Yeah, they have some great shirts. I pretty much live in the Stafford button down oxford dress shirts. They take forever to wear out. I can guarantee they have them in your size too; even at my heaviest(~400) I didn’t max out their big men sizes.

Nice to know that a store I shop at is doing the right thing. Guess it’s time for me to order some more shirts too.

  • lordshipmayhem

I need some socks, but unfortunately JC Penny doesn’t have any stores in Canada…

    They’re being ignored? That’s funny…cuz I just got a nice little response from JC Penney’s :P

    Dear. Ms. (Neko :P)

Our recent announcement, rooted in rich heritage, re-imagines every aspect of our business to become America’s favorite store. We appreciate your feedback and are equally excited to partner with America’s favorite host and former jcp associate, Ellen Degeneres, to help tell our story. Thank you for your feedback.

I am a mom and though we only get to view the older Ellen shows in South Africa my husband, myself and our daughter spend many happy hours watching her.

A daily dose of laughter is so difficult to come by lately. We thank her for helping out.

    GO ELLEN!!

One Million Moms and National Organization for Marriage have such similar ideologies…who else thinks they should merge and become OMM-NOM (NOM)?

If they were cool organizations I’d be all for it but as they are it would just ruin one of our best expressions. We’d have to think of a new phrase for consumption of bacon.

  • C. Bollinger

I sent this to those meanie mouth girls thru their webpage. They will probably delete immediately and then brand me a sinner who must repent of my wayward ways. >> You girls had better never cross the boundary I have set up for my family. Dont you dare attempt to tell our daughters they are associated with a baby killer organization (The Girl Scouts). Dont you dare attempt to tell our sons they are immoral sinners. Dont you dare even think about telling me and mines how our private lives are to be maintained. Dont you dare attempt to tell Freedom Loving United States of America citizens what we can and cannot bring into our private homes. Stay away from our children, our families and our homes.
