Satanism at the Grammys

At the Grammy Awards last weekend apparently Nicki Minaj did a routine that paid homage to film Beyond the Door (similar to The Exorcist).

This was enough for a couple Catholic groups to lose their shit.  An article on dividedstates.com called the performance Satanic and cranked the martyr up to eleven.

“Nicki’s disturbing performance at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards was a blatant attack on the Catholic church.  No one is sure why she has such disdain for the Church but many actually believe she is simply evil and it [sic] reflected in everything she does and every song she sings and every performance she gives.”

Ray Garton has a beautiful take down of the whole mess that ends with a line I thought was spectacular.

You want people to show your religion respect?  Then your religion is going to have to do what every other organization on earth that wants respect has to do.

Stop being such a monumental, obnoxious pain in the ass and earn it.

It’s bound to give Bill Donohue a hernia.

    Nicki Menaj isn’t evil, she’s just silly. And her performance at the Grammys wasn’t an “attack” on anything; it was just an overblown music-video-on-stage that portrayed her as a girl posessed by a demon the old white proests couldn’t exorcise.

    Which, to be fair, was an incredibly stupid thing for a woman to pretend to be if she wants to be respected as a person making her own choices and standing by them. Seriously, does she really want us to believe that a young woman growing up and discovering her adult persona is actually posessed by a demon? Not a good message for girls, and not a good decision for Nicki.

    Musicians doing provocative stage performances? Inconceivable! Stop the presses!

    I seriously cannot grasp how these people even function in the real world.

      They probably saw Scramin’ Jay Hawkins when they were younger, clutched their pearls in horror at something slightly different then the wind changed and they were stuck that way.

      I’d say they deserve sympathy for such a fate but its too damn funny to do anything other than laugh at them

    Music performances: Serious business.

    This was the response I left on that blog post – I wonder if the good Catholics will see the irony?):

    “Let’s get some clarity with our definitions. This has nothing to do with bigotry. It’s mocking and ridiculing the beliefs of a group with nothing further. On the other hand, bigotry requires an act or an attempt to subvert or dominate a group (which Minaj’s performance did not do), in the same way that Islamists treat women as second class.”

    Performances =/= reality.

    Though there’s no shortage of fundies willing to BELIEVE that anyone who expresses a contrary opinion or independent thought is POSSESSED by SATAN. AT least that’s what they keep telling their followers.
