Day of comments #4: The value of human life

I did a post earlier featuring a comment by Icy Cantu.  Icy didn’t feel moved to provide evidence for why Christianity is true, but he did threaten everybody who didn’t believe the same way he did.  I pointed that out.

Icy came back with more of the same.

I live in a farming community. If you told any one of these farmers that “they and photosysthesis” are the source of what is produced for you, they would first give you a sly grin, and then proceed to explain in very few, well-chosen words that God, and God alone, is the source of all things – and that you need a trip to the woodshed.

Something else a lot of people do out in these parts is hunt. If you and I are just a mass of cells with a brain, what makes us any different from the deer, raccons and other critters? Are we just scared animals trying to avoid predators – or, worse, predators always on the prowl? If that is so, you should spend more time in fear, than proud antilocution…because you are just a bug to be squashed.

Fortunately, you are more than that. You are made in the image of God…and you are right now under His protection.

*sigh*

Do they have any evidence for this?

And more threats.  If you don’t believe in god you deserve to be beaten.  No evidence, but when you’re unconvinced (probably due to the lack of evidence), it’s time for the physical pain.  It’s the woodshed in life, hell in the afterlife.

Being wrong would be bad enough, but you add on this stuff.  And then you wonder why I take your words seriously.  Simple: your beliefs are silly beyond measure, but you (and plenty of other religious people) keep threatening the well-being/happiness of those who don’t agree with you on account of those silly beliefs.

And here’s what gets me.  When someone asks me why they should believe as I do, I explain it to them using the pieces of reason/evidence that convinced me.  Naturally whatever convinces us is what we think should convince others.  All this stuff about fearing hell and being taken to the woodshed must be why Icy believes as he does.  That’s a pretty shitty way to live.  Why would I ever want that?

Not much.  Greater intelligence.  We wear clothes, have an economy…

If that is so, you should spend more time in fear, than proud antilocution…because you are just a bug to be squashed.

What does this have to do with anything?  Are you subtly suggesting that you’d kill other human beings if not for belief in god?  Without belief in god we shouldn’t worry about the well-being of others?  What is your exact message, because you sound like a sociopath trying to lecture us on compassion.

I do worry about what humans will do when they’re possessed by religion.  For instance, you’ve already implied I need a trip to the woodshed and you’re insisting we’ll be roasted for all eternity if we don’t believe the things for which you’ve given us no evidence.

Fortunately, you are more than that. You are made in the image of God…and you are right now under His protection.

I’m under god’s protection, while his follower comes and leaves vague and implicit threats on my blog.  That’s kind of like being under the protection of the mafia: it’s not something you want.

Also, is there an award for whoever can make the most outlandish claims without providing a dollop of evidence?  If so, you should apply.
