What we call courage, they call immoral.

Also in Boston this month, the Profile in Courage Award was given by the John F. Kennedy Library to three former justices of the Iowa Supreme Court who were part of the unanimous court establishing same-sex marriage in Iowa as a constitutional right under state law, and who were removed from office after a $1 million campaign against them by conservatives.

Courage: doing what is right regardless of what bullies do.

  • John Eberhard

Courage. Following the Constitution they swore to uphold.
No wonder there was a million dollar conservative propaganda movement to remove them.

They deserve that award, and more. It’s heartbreaking how they’ve been treated for their integrity.

As I recall, most of the money came from out of state, too. And they refused to spend money fighting back, as that’s not part of their job. A lot of misinformation was spread as well, about how voting them out would reverse their ruling. Glad they finally got some recognition for doing their jobs. The other 4 judges involved in the unanimous decision are still there, and we still have gay marriage.

Another is up for his retention election this fall, and the fundies are going after him too. Reportedly, he will fight to keep his seat. See http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2012305130048&nclick_check=1 for details.

Also, the state’s GOP wants to get a majority in the state senate so they can start the process to amend the state’s constitution to overturn Varnum v. Brien.

Oh, and those justices got their own charming correspondence, like the letter that advocated bringing back Nazi gas chambers as reported in the Des Moines Register:
