Department of Defense to extend full benefits to married same sex couples no later than Sept. 3.

I feel like I’m not providing a whole lot of commentary in my blogs today…that’s simply because there isn’t much more to say.  Such is the case here.  This is a victory for human decency, for fairness…and it’s very telling that these same things are being considered a loss by the most fervent practitioners of a faith they consider to be the most loving of all.

Pentagon officials announced Wednesday that the DOD will provide marriage benefits to same-sex couples for the first time, giving gay spouses access to health care, housing allowances and family separation pay.

The move comes little more than a month after the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, which Defense Department leaders have said prevented them from offering federal marriage benefits to gay troops. Numerous government agencies have taken steps to offer health care and other benefits to same-sex married couples in the wake of the ruling.

In a statement, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the move reflects the Defense Department’s commitment to “ensuring that all men and women who serve in the U.S. military and their families are treated fairly and equally.”

Hell yes.  It was a long fight that paid off.  This is the tip of the ice berg.

We got the talking points sent down from Public Affairs today. Mostly unsurprising, though as you say, a victory for fairness. What was interesting is that same sex couples living in an area that won’t give a marriage license will get 7-10 days un-chargable leave to go somewhere that does and get married.
