Republican defends getting paid during shutdown with “I need my paycheck.”

Renee Ellmers (R-NC) is a member of the faction of Congress that has forced a government shutdown which has caused upwards of one million Americans to not get paid, all in an effort to undermine the political process and force changes to a law that has already been passed.  When asked about the irony of Ellmers receiving a paycheck during the shutdown when masses of federal employees who make less than she were going unpaid, Ellmers decided to put her full lack of empathy on display:

Though dozens of her colleagues have decided to either forego receiving a paycheck or else donate their salary to charity while the government is shut down and hundreds of thousands of federal employees have been furloughed, Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) is adamant about making sure her $174k/year plus benefits remain undisturbed.

“I need my paycheck. That’s the bottom line,” Rep. Ellmers told ABC affiliate WTVD. “I understand that there may be some other members who are deferring their paychecks, and I think that’s admirable. I’m not in that position.”

Ellmers, a registered nurse by trade, took office in 2011 after defeating seven-term Democrat Bob Etheridge. Ellmers husband is a general surgeon who runs his own practice.

She needs her paycheck!  She knows what it feels like to need a paycheck.  She may not know what it feels like to need that paycheck like the hundreds of thousands of people who don’t make nearly as much as Ellmers, but she at least knows how it feels to be bound to a paycheck.  Hell, going by her quote, she also knows how it feels to need health coverage.

And she still played party to the government shutdown.  She still put other government employees out of pay, but not herself (she needs her paycheck), to achieve her political goals.

What a deplorable human being.
