When Russia passed its law against educating young people about LGBT issues, the reasoning was:
“I think this is kind of an invented problem,” he said. “We don’t have a law banning non-traditional sexual relations, we have a different law.
“It is the informational protection of the young generation. We want to prevent the young generation, whose psyche has not been formulated.
“We want to protect them against drunkenness, drugs and non-traditional sexual relations. We want them to grow up and when they become adults they have to define what they want.”
As I said at the time:
One can only wonder, then, why the law only prohibits talking to young people about homosexuality and not about straight sex. Wouldn’t that be putting a particular kind of attraction into the minds of young people?
What’s more, to compare loving another man/woman (or even just plain ol’ sex with them) to drugs and drunkenness in terms of how they might harm someone is ludicrous beyond words. It is the very core of what it means to be anti-gay. If “traditional” sexual relations (which a cursory study of human sexuality will reveal to be not very traditional) are ok, then same-sex relations are also ok.
So anyway, the story Russian officials are sticking to is that they just don’t want to influence the choice kids make on what genitals to find attractive, as if that’s a choice they make. It’s not an anti-gay law…no, no, no, they’re just looking out for the kids. In fact, they’ve found a new way to look out for kids: by keeping them from being adopted. Now Russia is trying to stop LGBT parents from Sweden from adopting Russian children:
Representatives of the Russian authorities and the Swedish embassy met yesterday to discuss the legal situation with regard to adoptions of Russian children. Russia is seeking to sign agreements with individual countries to ensure that Russian children do not come to LGBT parents, according to the SVT report.
The Swedish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that no formal negotiations have begun, but the meeting concerned an attempt to clarify what the new law means in practice.
Russian politician Vitaly Milonov meanwhile called homosexuals “perverts” in an interview with SVT broadcast on Thursday, arguing that children would be better off staying in Russian orphanages.
“The perverts? No, it is unacceptable. Homosexuals are ‘perverts’ and should absolutely not be allowed to adopt children,” he said. “Children who grow up in that kind of environment are destroyed psychologically.”
Here we have someone asserting things that could not be more in conflict with the facts as determined by the experts in the relevant sciences (in this case, psychology) with unflinching confidence. Feels like church, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised when Catholics/Christians are the ones cheering this madness on in Russia.
Love is not a perversion. Hatred though, hatred so strong it can make you think that keeping an orphan from a loving family is a good thing…that, to my eye, is about as perverse as it gets.
