Since the passage of a bill which promises harsh penalties (life in prison) for homosexuality and anybody who aids and abets homosexuals, Uganda has become a nightmare for LGBT people. This nightmare exists, quite simply, because Christianity is getting its way.
I just saw this trailer for a documentary by Roger Ross Williams called God Loves Uganda that will examines the situation there.
It’s being screened now and, unfortunately, nowhere near me. If you live in a place that gets it (St. Louis on the 23rd, to all my homies there) and want to write a review for this site, I’d happily post it.
“Almost every evangelical I met –American or Ugandan– was polite, agreeable, even charming. Yet I knew that if the bill passed, there would be blood on the streets of Kampala.”
Yes, this is what religion is capable of: it can turn otherwise nice people into monsters – monsters who serve cruelty as passionately as they wish to serve love. Kindly trampling the liberty of others and smiling while meting out agony and injustice…that’s not love, it’s irony. And it’s what amounts to Christianity in most places.
