A Brief Update

It's been six months since I've posted here, but I haven't just been sitting around, I assure you! Most of my online activity now happens over at Life After God, including the podcast. Here are one or two highlights if you haven't heard the podcast yet.I'm going to be dusting off this blog a little bit and doing a little blogging during the remainder of the summer and then see where we go from there. But before I say more about that, here are a couple of things I'll be doing in the next few … [Read more...]

Different era, same injustice

I'm completely geeking out right now! I'm sitting at the Mark Twain House in Hartford, CT (actually, in the Carriage House next door) where I'm speaking tonight at 7 pm about my Year Without God. Church, with or without God

This past weekend I had the privilege of traveling back to North Carolina to attend a lecture series put on by the First Congregational Church in Hendersonville, featuring Gretta Vosper, pastor of West Hill United Church of Canada and author of With or Without God: Why the Way We Live is More Important Than What We Believe and Amen: What Prayer Can Mean in a World Beyond Belief.I've almost finished With or Without God and I highly recommend it. Fridays and weekends have never meant so much to me. Because I was a Seventh-day Adventist pastor my entire adult life, I never had a free weekend and Friday, so far from being something to thank God for, was the most stressful evening the week. As my friends were easing into the weekend, I was bracing for a day of performance anxiety, public speaking, and listening intently to people’s personal needs.Friday morning brought the familiar sense of dread—feeling unprepared to give my sermon or t … [Read more...]
