Behold! The Holy Week Treasure Map

I’m not saying it’s perfect, but it is worth sharing.

It would be neat, for example, if the Holy Thursday description noted that the Messiah, the new Moses, institutes the New Passover Feast, the Eucharist, so we can be led out of bondage (this world) by him into the new promised land (the new heaven and earth), but who am I to criticize? Besides, there’s no space for all of that.

I only wish I knew who came up with this, so I could tell them “Bravo Zulu.”

Cardinal Dolan on How the POTUS Broke Faith And Announced the HHS Mandate Was a “Fait Accompli”

Stop the presses, as this just came in from todays’ Wall Street Journal. A frank interview between James Taranto, and Cardinal Timothy Dolan on the HHS Mandate surprise attack. Perhaps “ambush” is a better description. You be the judge.

By JAMES TARANTO, New York

The president of the U.S. Conference of Bishops is careful to show due respect for the president of the United States. “I was deeply honored that he would call me and discuss these things with me,” says the newly elevated Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York. But when Archbishop Dolan tells me his account of their discussions of the ObamaCare birth-control mandate, Barack Obama sounds imperious and deceitful to me. [Read more...]

For Your Lenten Friday Night at the Movies V

This is the year of seeing films I have never seen before. Last week, we saw Richard Burton and Jean Simmons in The Robe. And in the weeks previously, we’ve watched St. Ralph, and The Mighty Macs too. So aside from The Musketeers double feature, every film this year has been a first time view for me.

Tonight is no exception. [Read more...]

Earl Scruggs, Requescat In Pace

What is the happiest sounding instrument in the world? Hands down, my vote goes to the banjo. And one of the greatest players of the banjo of all time has been called home. Yes, we have lost Earl Scruggs, and I for one am saddened by this news. But not for long, see? Because Earl wouldn’t put up with me wearing the long face for too long.

The Associated Press relates the news to us as follows, [Read more...]

Cardinal Dolan on the O’Reilly Factor’s “No Spin Zone” and an Idea to Get Him on Comedy Central Too.

Rocco Palmo scooped this up first, naturally, and it’s fantastic.

Wasn’t that awesome? Bravo Zulu.

But while Rocco waxes euphoric about our favorite USCCB quarterback getting seen by over 3 million (mostly conservative) viewers on Bill O’Reilly’s show, I’m thinking His Excellency should take his show on the road, and head over to Comedy Central and pick up the other viewers too. He should make appearances where the rest of the viewers, including liberals and independents, are: [Read more...]

Mr. President? A Trifecta of Anti-HHS Mandate Videos for the Situation Room

Not so fast, Mr. President. In fact, it appears that you have awoken a sleeping giant. For your viewing pleasure, sir, I present these three excellent videos that express to you, and your Administration, the opinions of the (heretofore) Silent Majority.  I’ve arranged them in order of the number of views they have received on YouTube to date. How to Approach Christ in the Eucharist (A Few Words for Wednesday)

The Eucharist has been on my mind lately. This evening at our parish, my wife and I finished a six week long reading and discussion of Brant Pitre’s, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist. What a delight and a treasure trove of knowledge that book is. I’ll share more on what I learned soon, as the thoughts that Dr. Pitre shared from the history of the Exodus to the Last Supper needs to be known by all Christians.

But it’s Wednesday, and late, and I’ve been too busy to post lately. As such, I’ll share a quick post on how to approach Christ in the Eucharist, courtesy of my friend Thomas à Kempis. He’s one of the fellows that helped bring me into the Church. Prior to my call to conversion, I had never even heard of the word until I met my wife. When I learned of its meaning, and who it is (or who Catholics thought it was) I was incredulous. Eighteen years later I woke up, thanks to Blaise Pascal and à Kempis. [Read more...]

One for the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord (Music for Mondays)

Have you ever asked your mom to pray for you? I have. And one of the truly amazing graces is that as a believer in the Communion of the Saints, I can ask the Mother of our Lord and Savior to pray for me as well. [Read more...]

Because God Is A Crazy Farmer, Thankfully! UPDATED

I’ve been working in the yard around Casa del Weathers. One thing I’ve been doing a lot of lately is weeding. Not that I have some sort of pristine yard that I need to keep up so I can one up the Joneses, or anything. But I like my flower beds to contain flowers, and not weeds. As for my yard, which out back (especially) is pretty much a random assortment of weeds and grasses that are shade tolerant, I pretty much follow the dictum to live and let live.

Except for the dandelions. [Read more...]

Joe Six-Pack’s Public Comment on the HHS Mandate “Proposed Rule: Certain Preventive Services Under the Affordable Care Act”

It’s a lovely Saturday, following on the heels of a Friday in which many folks turned out during their lunch hours to stand up for religious liberty. From the photographs I’ve seen posted on Facebook and other blogs, the turnout was pretty good. NPR even reported on the event, as did a few other news outlets, like the Washington Post.

Truth be told, I couldn’t make it to the event that was planned nearest to my home. [Read more...]
