Cardinal Dolan’s Letter to the Bishops UPDATED

Dated March 2, 2012 and presented below in it’s entirety. All links added are the work of your blogger.

My brother bishops,

Twice in recent weeks, I have written you to express my gratitude for our unity in faith and action as we move forward to protect our religious freedom from unprecedented intrusion from a government bureau, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). I remain deeply grateful to you for your determined resolve, to the Chairmen of our committees directly engaged in these efforts – Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Bishop Stephen Blaire and Bishop William Lori -who have again shown themselves to be such excellent leaders during these past weeks, and to all our staff at the USCCB who work so diligently under the direction of the Conference leadership. “Whereas Distractions are Evanescent, the Religious-Liberty Issue Hasn’t Gone Away”

Nor will it, because this is the crux of the matter. These revelations are nothing new to readers of this space. But for those who need more convincing, this post today from James Taranto, of the Wall Street Journal’s Best of the Web feature, The Fluke Distraction, may do nicely. Bold portions highlighted below are mine.

There seems to be wide agreement that the Sandra Fluke kerfuffle handed the left a major political victory. We respectfully dissent. [Read more...]

Bishop Lori Goes “Columbo” on the Editors of “America” Magazine

I don’t know about you, dear reader, but I loved Peter Falk’s character of the seemingly bumbling detective named Lt. Columbo. All of the episodes were marvelous examples of the conventional wisdom assuming criminals, who also just knew that they were the smartest people in the room, winding up getting out foxed by this seemingly idiotic, nay, imbecilic, homicide inspector.

Check out Falk’s in-character performance here at a Dean Martin roast of Frank Sinatra, [Read more...]

The Politics of the HHS Mandate Made Clear, Part Deux

Remember the other day when I said “it’s all about getting votes for the incumbent, and staying in power?” One doesn’t have to be Sun Tzu to have figured this out. The trick is not to look suspicious. You know, make them watch one hand…instead of the one that’s ripping them off.

The folks on The Hill noticed, [Read more...]

Ben Franklin’s Warning, Winston Churchill’s Observation, And Catholic Support for the Rights of Mankind UPDATED

For about a few months now, I’ve been mentioning things political that should matter to Catholics, and thus to all human beings. A few months back, I mentioned a scandal with our war dead that is another marker of trouble. Mark Shea wrote on these issues in a manner that helps bring to light what is at stake here.

For as St. Paul writes in his letter to the Romans, [Read more...]

Good Discussions Only Seen On A Comedy Show UPDATED

Jon Stewart gives up 12 minutes of airtime to discussion of Catholic social teachings, with Cathleen Kaveny. Name another network that has done the same lately…*crickets chirping.*

UPDATE: Word on Fire’s Rozann Carter brings up a few points that were forgotten/ omitted by Dr. Kaveny. And Jennifer Hartline on who is really getting played while women “star” in the HHS Mandate imbroglio.

For Your Lenten Friday Night at the Movies I

Here we are on a Friday night during Lent. So do you know what that means around here, aside from not eating meat? It means it’s movie night! And to kick off the Third(?!) Annual Lenten Friday Night at the Movies, I’ve got young ladies, nuns in habits, and basketball.

The Mighty Macs, starring Carla Gugino, Ellen Burstyn, and (vampire/vampire killer) David Boreanez. [Read more...]

The Politics of the HHS Mandate Made Clear UPDATED

It’s all about getting votes for the incumbent, and staying in power. It’s a calculated risk, mind you, and one that looked like a good bet until the outcry from the Catholic Church, and others like-minded in their understanding of the First Amendment. The Administration thought it was prepared for this contingency, and waiting in the wings was an “accommodation” tailor-made to put to rest the fears of the affected parties.

There is only one problem. [Read more...]
