Thanks to Our Mothers: Past, Present, and Future

Breakfast in Bed (1897) by Mary Cassatt – oil on canvas, Huntington Library

This Sunday in the United States we celebrate our mothers. Though it is a secular holiday, it’s one of the best ones on the calendar. I want to wish a Happy Mothers Day to all of the mothers out there.

The portrait above is by Mary Cassatt and is entitled Breakfast in Bed. I have very fond memories of being cuddled by my mother and of seeing my wife cuddle my children like this (before they grew into bean stalks!) as well.

To help celebrate this life giving vocation, I found these thoughts on the importance of motherhood from one of my favorite Catholic authors. Once again, G.K. Chesterton, the Apostle of Common Sense, hits the nail right on the head. [Read more…]

YIMCatholic Is Back At Patheos, Obviously

It’s late on a Thursday night, but not too late to write a brief post saying, “You may not have noticed, but I’m back to blogging again.”

Yep. Check out this graph,

Someone isn’t flying under the radar anymore, Houston.

Having flown along on auto-pilot, see, at tree-top level, for approximately 9 months, YIMCatholic appears to be climbing again.

I reckon the pilot woke up? [Read more…]

For Christmas, we were given one of those little inspirational calendars. You know the kind. Every day you flip a page over and meet a new quote to great the day with. The person who bought ours got it from a nondenominational Christian community called Kenilworth Union Church. They call the calendar Day by Day, 2015.  [Read more…]

The Little Sisters Of The Poor Take Their Case To SCOTUS

A few days ago, I was going to mention that the main reason why some cases are settled justly the first time, while others aren’t, has a lot to do with which circuit court the case is heard in. When a lower court decides against a plaintiff, the next step is to appeal the judgement.

To the highest court of the land, then, is where the Little Sisters of the Poor are headed. Again. [Read more…]

Join the club.Evidently there isn’t enough important stuff happening in the world these days, so the Obama Administration plays a game of chicken with the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Go figure.

Perhaps doing so makes the Administration feel powerful, while they neglect to do much of anything of substance in other spheres?

Here’s the Wall Street Journal interviewing Stephanie Barclay of the Becket Fund For Religious Liberty. Roll tape. [Read more…]

The Supreme Court Unanimously Finds That Speech Is Created Equal

No biggie. Just another 9-0 decision that bolsters religious liberty.

No biggie. Just another 9-0 decision that bolsters religious liberty.

In other words, the government can’t decide that one type of speech is more worth protecting than any other. Once again, just like back in 2012 in the Hosanna-Tabor case, the Supreme Court has come out unanimously in a decision favoring a little church’s rights. In this case, it’s right to free speech.

Representing the plaintiffs in Reed vs. Gilbert, Alliance Defending Freedom scored a victory in this eight year long ordeal. Because in Gilbert, Arizona, see, somebody decided that some folks’ speech rights were more equal than others. Roll tape. [Read more…]

For Thoughts On The Solemnity Of The Most Sacred Heart Of Jesus

Are you on vacation yet? The funny thing about vacations is that when on holiday from the world, and from the pressures of time, it’s quite easy to see all manner of things through rose colored glasses. In fact, I would go so far as to say that everything is better when one is on vacation, be it food, music, company, or conversation. Have you noticed this too? The phenomenon is what leads me to believe vacations are a foretaste of eternal life in heaven. [Read more…]
