Help The Eastern Rite Nuns In Ukraine. Here’s How. UPDATED

During more peaceful times a few years back.

Unless you’re living under a rock, you know about the crisis that has erupted in the Crimea region of Ukraine. Yesterday, I suggested  you pray for the people caught up in this man-made storm.

Prayer is a work of spiritual mercy, and today I offer you a more tangible way to assist: bring gifts of corporal mercy to the war torn region.

My Favorite Psalm

Guaranteed 100% accurate!

King David and Joe Six-Pack have something in common. A number of things, actually. He was a soldier, while I was a Marine. He was a repentant sinner, and I am one still. He was a bit of an extrovert, and according to Myers-Briggs (all characters in the Bible took the test. No, really.), he and I share the same personality type. He wrote poems with verve, which are the kind of poems I like to read.

But the real reason I know we have a lot in common? That’s easy. Just take a look at Psalm 131. [Read more...]

Blogging And The Art Of Mustang Maintenance (Or, My “Saint Joseph’s Retreat” Explained)

The first thing you need to know is that I just made up the idea of  taking a blogging break  and calling it a Saint Joseph’s Retreat. Why did I call it that? Because Jesus’s foster father wasn’t very chatty, see? The man was a worker bee who either didn’t say much, or else everything he did say was unprintable. Most prefer the former description, but no one really knows for sure.

The second thing you need to know is that my Saint Joseph’s Retreat is over. [Read more...]

Secretary John Kerry Gets An Earful From The Vatican SecState Regarding The HHS Mandate

“Ahem. About the recent domestic unpleasantness with the Little Sisters of the Poor, Papa Francesco is not ‘amused.’

The big headline was all about Pope Francis’s strong words regarding the horror of abortion. Let others be shocked that il Papa stands for the culture of life. The neat thing to me was that the comments were made to the envoys to the Holy See. Ambassadors will have a few things to report back to their respective Chief Executives, etc.

The tidbit that stealthily stood out to me, though, was the mention of the 100 minute long meeting between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Vatican Secretary of State, Archbishop Pietro Parolin. They discussed, among other important things, the HHS Mandate. Francis X. Rocca of the Catholic News Service spells it out below, [Read more...]

Archbishop Kurtz: “We know that the Constitution and the law protect us from heavy-handed government demands that we violate our consciences…”

Though the present Administration doesn’t see things this way. This thought was from an editorial posted by the Religion News Service written by Archbishop Joseph Kurtz,  President of the USCCB.

Archbishop Lori To Congress: Let Our People Go

Archbishop William Lori took to the pages of The Baltimore Sun yesterday in an effort to let the peoples’ representatives in the House and Senate, see, hear, and act now to stymie Caesar. Take a look.

Pope Francis recently reaffirmed that religious freedom is “a fundamental human right” and warned against the impulse to “relegate [religions] to the enclosed precincts of churches, synagogues or mosques.” The freedom of religion cannot be reduced to the freedom of worship. [Read more...]

To Pray For Michael Schumacher’s Recovery UPDATE

UPDATE

It’s been 91 days since Michael Schumacher’s skiing accident. Put into an induced coma for a craniectomy, Michael has not regained consciousness.  Please continue to pray for his recovery.

I found out early this morning that Michael Schumacher, the 7-time Formula One Champion (1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002,2003, 2004) who retired for a second time last year, sustained a head injury while skiing a few days ago.

Please say a quick prayer for his full recovery, ok? I’ll provide you with more details on his accident and condition in a moment, but let me, the resident gearhead at the Patheos Catholic channel, beg you your prayers. [Read more...]
